Spotted on a right hand drive Volvo XC something.

Blue lettering, exactly the same plate front and rear.

I suspect Ukraine - they have lots of formats including AA 111 111, and it would explain a non-compliant plate let in without fuss.

ETA: Nope, apparently no ND-prefixes, so not that.

I have the unfair advantage of having spent a good few years there wink

I'm curious as to why it's on that registration in the UK. I believe imports would need to be reregistered onto a GB registration. I've only seen classics on older style ZA plates. It's a long way to drive.

I believe a vehicle is allowed to be here for 6 months before it's required to be registered and licensed here.

Not that I imagine this is enforced in any way shape or form.

Could well be. I've only seen in the area recently (last few months) driven by a black woman around a primary school at school time. Always the same person driving.

I didn't realise the rules were as complex as they are - https://katsgoneglobal.com/how-to-drive-a-foreign-...

"Registration numbers need to be displayed in Latin characters and Arabic numbers so those police officers can read it."

Doesn't apply to rich students from Saudi or Qatar....

You could say to her 'I bet you're missing the weather in Durbs' as an opener. Follow that with a 'Go Sharks' for good measure.

The registration wouldn't be recognised by ANPR? So exempt from speeding fines, parking fines, congestion charges, ULEZ charges, insurance and MOT for as long as you can get away with it? Can't even be bothered to put a ZA country identifier on it.

I suspect ANPR isn’t that stupid and can read the plates.
However, they won’t (obviously) be in the DVLA database!
I suspect there’s a separate dept. that get alerted when a numberplate cannot be looked up. Whether they do anything off the back of it, who knows!

The police told me a few years back that they had no means of tracing or even logging foreign plates.

I live in a village with a large industrial estate and equally as large work force. A good percentage of them are Eastern European. I've seen Polish and other vehicles driving to and from work for the two years I've lived here, always the same cars. They stand out due to the plates and I am a car geek so I notice them.

I don't think the police care / have the resources / can even trace them properly.

About 30 years ago a Canadian pal of mine moved to Europe for work, and brought his Honda CRX (on Canadian plates) with him. He did go to the effort of getting a UK MOT and received a UK registration number, but he just tossed the new plates in the boot and never fitted them. He cruised around for several years on Canadian plates, although he did get a new UK MOT each year!

Used to see that quite a lot when I worked in Ipswich, however the done thing round there seemed to be buying a car in England, driving it to Romania, re-registering on Romanian plates and then returning to Blighty. There were several, quite obviously RHD UK home market cars running round the place on Romanian number plates. I saw one parked, had a look and saw the UK dealer stickers still on it!
