Limited edition Trofeo heralds Granturismo return

New PrimaSerie car keeps 550hp V6 - but Maserati has much to shout about after 75 years of GTs

There’s good cause to be pretty excited about the new Maserati GranTurismo, what with its suave new look, MC20-donated V6 and fascinating EV flagship. That the mid-engined supercar has been received so well gives us high hopes for the imminent arrival of the new GT.

This will be the GranTurismo offered to the first few customers; the PrimaSerie - quite literally ‘first edition’ in Italian - is based on the most powerful combustion-engined model, the 550hp Trofeo, and celebrates 75 years of Maserati GTs. As such, just 75 will be produced, which does make the PrimaSerie a fair bit rarer than most launch specs. (Although actually there will be 150 in total, as there are 75 examples of each colour specification.)

One is inspired by the Officine Alfieri Maserati, matt grey - sorry, Grigio Lamiera Matte - with red details and black wheels, 20-inch at the front and 21s at the rear. The other is described as ‘an out-of-this-world declaration of performance’, in matt black with mint green accents. Pretty out there for Maserati not that long ago, but in the world of Fuoriserie - its personalisation department - this is pretty restrained.

Both get a mild interior overhaul as well, with the colours used outside mirrored for the cabin, including stitches and badges. There’s no wild upholstery here, as befits the more mature remit of a GranTurismo. Does looks a nice step up from recent Maserati interiors, though.

A UK allocation for the PrimaSerie hasn’t yet been confirmed, though there clearly won’t be many - if any - given the tiny overall run. We’re still waiting on any pricing information in fact, though with the international launch now in full swing those numbers can’t be far away.

And if the GranTurismo delivers on its potential, we’ll take one in matt mint green with black accents - after all, the world has been waiting a while for a truly great Maserati GT.

I went to a low key launch of the standard GT a few weeks ago in Birmingham ... one of just 3 presentations around the country.

The interior is absolutely superb but we weren't allowed to take photos.

Back at the dealers one of the other guys I was with ordered one of the matt black / green PrimaSerie cars there and then.

A pretty enough car, but they've managed to launch a brand new model that looks seven or eight years old.

Agree with you here. That rear in particular is barely changed since 2011.

It's not even as pretty as the original. It's like a blingy version of it. The best cosmetic changes appear to all be on the inside (seat colour excepted).

Fully agree. It looks like the previous gen. Could've put a bit of effort in

...and some of us thought the original was a bit blingy after the more reserved 3200/4200/Gransport.

Shirley they can go back to the boomerang rear lights now with modern LEDs. Stuff the Americans if they still don't like it.

The original car was always pretty look at even if it was pretty average to drive.

This has all the makings of another nearly car.

The perfect choice for the contrarian.

looks great this Granturismo, also sweet 550hp from a V6 biturbo.

how much would such engine weigh ?
cause the turbo's would make it a bit heavier then a NA V6, but just wondering for say a future V6 swap in something light, instead of a i4 or V8

Got to say, it is a handsome car. I wouldn't say no to one of them.

Now ignore the previous model for the second and take the new model on its own merits - does it really look old?

I don’t think so.

(And the original GranTurismo was launched nearly 16 years ago…)

Isn't that what Porsche has been doing for ages successfully?

Indeed and becoming one of the most valuable car companies in the process.
