On my way home last night the 'battery' warning light came on, fearing the worst given the cars mileage I assumed a new alternator.

However, I thought I'd check the simple things first, and it was the infamous 'big fuse' that had fractured with old age.

Thought I'd post this, as a lot of big fuse trouble don't seem to set off the battery warning light, but this one did.

Sounds like you car may have correct wiring fitted.

I would mix up some wires asap
