Lisbon - where to stay

Solo traveller going late March. Would like somewhere nearish the water, suitable for decent restaurants and city exploring but also within reasonable reach of a train station for rural excursions.

Never been to Portugal before so haven't got a clue. Don't mind self catering apartment or hotel/b&b.

Any suggestions gratefully received.
