Okay - let me explain the problem. On the server I have about 300 folders that all contain a sub folder I want to replace. Ideally I'd like to highlight all these folders on the server and drag and drop the folder that I want uploaded to these folders from my local machine and do it all at once.

However in CuteFTP Pro at the moment although I highlight them all on the server I drag and drop and it just uploads it once to which ever exact folder I dropped it into.

Does anyone know of any FTP software where I don't have to drag and drop to 300 individual folders and can do it all at once?

Many thanks, sorry it if I didn't explain myself in totally clarity, I'm suffering computer rage ;-)

Cheers

Tim.

I was playing with SmartFTP the other day and it seemed well featured. Oh, and it's free

could you zip them up, ftp them across then extract them again?

For a problem like that I would have thought a command line FTP would be your best bet, invoked once for each destination folder. If you can generate a list of destination directories it would be pretty straight forward to repeat the command for each folder.

I think this depends alot on what exactly you are doing.

If you are copying many folders to many locations, then you have to say where each one is going, however you look at it. That's the bit that takes the time.

If you're doing one to many then, I can understand your frustration to a degree. I suppose the point is that most would find it reasonable to have the data located in one place, and have everything point to it for reference.

Obviously there are wider implications too. If the data is likely to change often, then it's easily a considerable problem to manage version control, especially if different people have access to their own version of the data.

There are some circumstances where you would have multiple copies of the same data on one disk, user profiles are an example. With those one has an initial set of data, which is then modified by individual users to suit their needs. At the point where the user starts using their account the data becomes theirs, and updates are less of a problem.

All of the circumstances like this would normally have dedicated software to solve the particular details of the problem. In the user profiles example, each user might have a single file, with multiple settings. If, as the administrator you want to adjust a single setting within each file, operating at the file level is simply not adequate.

I have a feeling that if you really need to have multiple instances of the same data then there will be software for your particular problem. If there isn't, then you will probably be able to make money by selling the solution that you develop to solve the problem.

I think you're going to need a batch file, script, or some code to solve your problem in a satisfactory manner.

Okay, thanks for the feedback so far...I really thought that one of the FTP clients would offer this as a feature

Well, they might do. I cant claim a complete knowledge of all FTP software, but then again I'm not completely clear about what you're trying to do.

I suppose that all I am saying, is that by the sounds of it, you're not going to find what you're looking for unless you cut some code of some kind.

Batch file with a variable %1 which represents the file name and an ftp script?
