Yes, do it most days. You are also allowed to drive at 70 (if you are in a vehicle that is allowed to travel at 70 on a duel carriageway). I have only ever seen the tunnel run at National speed limit or 40mph.

You are also allowed to change lanes even if the tunnel is empty, such as move to the inside lane if you’ve decided 50mph is a safe and reasonable speed, if there is someone behind you.

Are we missing the point? Of course you may overtake in the Hindhead Tunnel, but the question was 'can' you overtake?'.

To which the answer is obviously that it depends on what you are driving, what you are trying to overtake, and the behaviour of the driver being overtaken. You probably cannot overtake a Ferrari if you are driving a tractor.

The line between the lanes always strikes me as a bit odd, as if it was in some way supposed to be solid.

The other question is why do so many people think the limit is 60mph?

Must admit when I do go through there and even though the lines down the centre are broken I do sometimes think "should I be moving lanes" I think because other tunnels that I have driven through do seem to be no moving between lanes.

It’s the lines that are confusing. Normal duel carriageway lines then they seem connected. They’re not, but they look it. It’s a strange one. I see cars sticking to lanes, cars moving all over the place. It’s just odd. It was just a honest observation question really

The length of lines on a dashed line represent the hazard level. It seems they consider Hindhead Tunnel extra hazardous

(Either that or - and I suspect this is the case tbh - that it's too difficult for them to paint near the road studs for some technical reason, but oh well take advantage!)

If it really was no overtaking it would be two solid white lines either side of the cats eyes. A solid line on a single side is telling that side it can't change lanes / overtake. This is (probably) trying to encourage you to stay in lane to reduce accidents from either poor overtaking, poor driving by the overtakee or bunching by the otherwise middle lane owners.

This is not a debate I would want to have at the side of the road though...

... yeh I always overtake... people always slow down in the tunnel to 50 or something...

I generally find the tunnel being utilised in Sport+ mode and the windows down gets the necessary effect
