drive them both. don't drive the elise if you intend to buy the s2k though as you will be kicking yourself after a few weeks.
s2k is comfier, better boot, 5.5 second hood, xenon lights, great air con.
elise is uncomfy, crashy, pain the ass hood, not very practical.
but for driver satisfaction is totally untouchable especially so in 111s guise.
the s2k is really slow low down in the revs though and is very tiresome trying to drive fast.
each to thier own - i would love to own both to be fair. looking back i was probably over critical of it but to be fair ownership of it was sandwiched between 2 elise 111 esses which im finding hard to get out my system.
try them both.

I am hoping to soon have this dilema myself! Either an mint s1 111s or S2 sports tourer or race tech. I think the styling of the S2 is really growing on me, although the extra power of the 111s is the tempting factor. Guys on here have said that the standard S2 is plenty quick and will keep you more than happy. What do you prefer?

Oh come on Malbon it's not that bad. For starters you're not comparing apples and apples.
The S1 Elise is a lightweight low volume sportscar which was designed and built to be a 100% driver-focused experience. The standard S2 was watered down to be more 'liveable' but still retains that initial concept and focus.
A good S1 which has been well looked after and does not have the std seats (i.e. 111s, Sport 135 or one of the special editions which had 111s seats [Type 49/79 for instance]) is perfectly comfortable unless you're a complete pussy.
They're only really crashy if the suspension is old and needs replacing, this can be sorted as we all know with the S2 bilsteins or Nitrons - depends on how much it aggravates you. Frankly if you're bothered by some noise, an Elise is not for you.
The hood is not that bad at all - I can get mine on/off sub-3 minutes without braking into a sweat, and if it suddenly pisses down I can get it on and covering the cabin in about 1min 30s. Again, no big deal unless you're a mal-coordinated lazy-ass.
The S2000 (whilst I have never driven one) is way more compromised, with an engine (like you note) that you have to screw the nuts off to really get cooking. Sure you get the quick hood, aircon and some toys, but that adds weight and saps power. Basically a more lardy car.
The dynamics of the Elise sub-speed limits, I'm sure, will beat the hell out of an S2000.
They are not in the same league.
As always its horses for courses.
What are you after,
A car that is very commfy looks nice and goes quite well = S2K
A car that is comfy enough, looks the dogs dangles, goes like a rocket = Elise
Personnel taste and the requirements of the user will always make a difference irrespective of what anyone else may say about which car is the better one. Drive them both, then make your choice.

whats the race tech dank?
I think i prefer S2 styling, but the S1 111s looks good with those wheels.

I have driven an S1 elise and loved it, obviously only for a short period but am sure i could live with it day to day. Having previously owned a 106gti and 306gti6 (current car) I am used to rattles and poor reliability but great driving experiences, should prepare me for an elise

I agree, i have an S2 standard '04 spec and its fab, I cant complain at all and its everything i hoped it would be..........er, but i had a play in a 111r the other weekend and will be purchasing in the near future (its that good!!).
It all depends what you want from it, the S is similar to the early S2's, as you really feel every bump in the road, great fun but the r is a genuine everyday and long trip car as its just a little more refined in all areas. Oh yeah, and you develop a really stupid grin when you hit the second cam!!!

Save your money on a 111R and get a S1 Sport 160. Best looking elise in many peoples eyes. They will keep up with the 111R as some boys on this site will agree.
Sports brakes, suspension, seats, its a track edition at the end of the day and if you want an elise then this version isnt much more un-refined than other S1 elise's. I do crave the extras though of the 111R, but I aint spending another £15,000 to get them !
