I thought this is interesting. From the excellent "car industry analysis" twitter feed @lovecarindustry

Plenty of car brands Ive never heard of. Interesting to see how they penetrate the market.
Lotus, morgan and mclaren very close for sales
Land rover just Porsche, and way ahead if we include the Jaguar brand. But on their own, just 24k sales.

Surprised Mazda aren’t slightly higher as I feel like I see them everywhere and definitely more prominent than Cupra of which I only ever see the Formentor, very rarely the Cupra Leon. (Also appears to contradict those who claimed it was a pointless creation and would be gone within a few years).

Appreciate all that’s anecdotal though and this covers the whole of Europe! Would be interesting to see a break down by specific country.

Thanks for posting.

I'm astonished by two things:
- VW being soooooooo far ahead of everyone else.
- Mercedes being in third!!

Take VW as a group (inc Audi, Skoda, Seat etc) and the number is more like 3 million.

It's interesting (concerning?) to compare the sales of McLaren to that of rivals Ferrari or Lamborghini.
Even Aston Martin are outselling them by a wide margin.

OK, I know this is only European sales rather than worldwide, but even so...
(Although Lotus are even worse)

Lancia outselling Alfa Romeo despite offering just one car in one country.

A few Chinese brands in that list. As it's European sales you'd wonder where they sell their few hundred or couple of thousand cars. Aiways sells their electric vehicles in Germany it seems, ironically through a company called Euronics Deutschland which is a cooperative of independent electronics and whitegoods retailers.

Probably mostly in Eastern Europe. I know there's a Great Wall dealer in Bulgaria, for example.

They've tried to sell the utility vehicles here (Australia) for quite a few years. They attract a certain type of buyer. They were pretty crappy years ago.

I think what'll be an annoyance for owners and potential owners of Chinese vehicles is the state of flux the Chinese automobile industry seems to be in. Brands come and go, joint ventures created and dissolved.

That’s pretty damning for Jaguar. They really are finished.

They never really were a 'volume' brand though.

What I find more telling is that the perceived prestige German brands sell way more than the budget options. I wonder if the rising interest rates will see this reversed in coming years. Once cheap finance/PCP deals are no longer on the table, will we see people who are reaching the end of their 3-year terms, and they are unable to afford a like-for-like replacement?

How is ‘Europe’ defined here out if interest? EU? Does it include UK, Switzerland etc?

This is European, not UK only sales.

It’s primarily here that people see the Germans as “prestige” and many cars they sell across Europe are hardly premium models, think simple spec 1/3 series/a3/a4/a class etc. Mercs common as taxis and so on.

Fascinating that Alpine really don't sell many cars at all, especially outside of France. 3,427 are pretty terrible sales numbers, I recall a deluded poster was posting some nonsense on here about them outselling the Cayman (despite the 718 model also including the Boxster). Madness.

Perhaps why MG are doing so well? They seem less... transient than many of the other Chinese brands.

Interesting comparison between Seat and Cupra.
