Has anyone looked forward to driving a car and then when they drove it/sat in it they were slightly underwhelmed?

For me it has to be the Jaguar XF (pre 2016). Interior felt claustrophobic, was hard to see out of I just found the angle of the windscreen was very narrow and I couldn't really see much of the bonnet. Maybe I am just used to driving hatchbacks.

Is this the case with other executive saloon cars?

Thanks

Back in the 90s I owned a 325i bmw but lusted after a 944 Porsche. When I finally test drove one, I unguarded asked the dealer 'why's it so slow?'

Agree, even by the standards of the day the 944 felt limp.

I bought this.

I thought it would be the highlight of my car ownership. I found it rather dull and emotionless, so I sold it for a crude Holden HSV - much more my thing..

No idea what E number it is, but a 2003/4 M3. It was piss yellow as well. Totally underwhelming and claustrophobic inside.

A 1997 Astra hire car. It was painfully slow and felt so down on power I took it to a main dealer for them to check it out.

For years I had dreamed of having a 911.

I took a 911 Turbo out from Porsche Reading…… is that it? Didn’t;t get the fuss.

This car was delivered new to me with 56 faults. In the few weeks I tolerated it it spent more time on a low loader than on the road.

An utterly utterly unmitigated disaster.

But, it was a stunner to look at.

E46. In Phoenix Yellow, by the sound of it.

MX-5

Bought a nice NC 3.5 Venture Edition. It was terrible on fuel for its performance, and once the novelty of putting the roof down wore off (it was my first convertible), I was bored of it. Lasted less than a year in my ownership.

Had a BMW m135 and thought it would be a replacement for my mk1 escort. Everything about it annoyed me, from the gearchange, ride/handling to the squidgy steering wheel.
It was even slower than the escort; it lasted 6 months before selling.

Blimey some big surprises in here, thought I was crazy for feeling underwhelmed with the XFR.

E46 M3, 911 (996). Both disappointed, both cost far more than they were actually 'worth' in terms of driving pleasure.

BMW M135i, wanted one since the came out, nice enough but not much fun, Fiesta ST that replaced it is a joy.

A recent (fairly) road test gave the Fiesta ST a win over the GR Yaris everyone is boring everyone else about. I'd seriously thought about an ST myself but went Polo Gti as it was tuned.

I've never driven anything that I considered utterly disastrous but I do remember driving a Focus ST and finding it a bit 'meh'.

I owned (and still own) a Megane 225 at the time. A chap I was friends with at the time was looking at the Focus ST so we went for a test drive. Interior felt nice but the ride was soft, steering felt slower and in 1st/2nd it felt a lot less urgent than I'd been used to.

I didn't hate it but it did underwhelm me a bit.

Turbo? I've had mine over 10 years. Pushing over 1000hp now, but it has always been a bit of a scalpel. Recalibrated my view on fast cars.

Its so effortlessly quick that it can become a bit mundane, unlike other cars which can be a bit of an event, the Porsche just eats the mileage, no drama, no theatre, job done with German efficiency.
