Hi all,

I have just bought a 2016 porsche cayman 981 club sport gt4 it has a full Porsche service history and warranty in place. I need to have a tracker for the insurance so booked it in at Porsche Swindon to get it activated however they advised there is no tracker present on the car.

I wrongly assumed as it had the pvts option and 2 tracker fobs in the glove box it had the necessary kit already in the car but obviously not. They said that the first owner of the car said no to the tracker and fire extinguisher even though it was included in the original price

As such I am just trying to work out what to do

1. Install a Porsche Vodafone tracker and pay the yearly subscription
2. Get another tracker installed but I am told this will invalidate the warranty..
3. Try and see if classicline will find me another insurer who doesn’t need a tracker

Any hints, tips or similar experiences would be appreciated

Thanks

Pete

Can't help you with the tracker, but Admiral haven't asked me to fit a Tracker to any of my cars

I've previously installed third party trackers on two of my cars and it didn't invalidate the warranty, so I would challenge them on that. One of the cars came from Swindon, but that was over ten years ago.

Might just be worth double checking with Vodafone first to see if fitted or are Swindon saying they have checked and one isn’t fitted ?
Only say that as it seems odd that the 2 fobs are with the car.

That’s what I thought but Porsche looked on the original build sheet and the 1st owner said no to a tracker and fire extinguisher. And they couldn’t find it on the car just as a double check

Will ring Vodafone just to be sure though

I guess the 1st owner could have purchased sometime later but if they have looked ….
Certainly on any cars I have bought in recent years and had the tracker fitted the fobs would be supplied with the tracker itself.
Good luck with Vodafone.

Neither do Aviva on my 981 Spyder - guess it will depend on use and where you keep it though.

Assume your using classicline for the inclusive trackday cover? If so then your options are somewhat limited as there are few few other brokers/insurers willing to offer track inclusive policies and those that do are not very competitive on price.

A couple of things to consider. The OPC won't for the 111 point check dismantle the interior to find any hidden devices. However aftermarket electronics including trackers are against the T&C's of the extended warranty being deemed a modification. Ultimately unless you tell them or something goes wrong with the car they're unlikely to find any aftermarket tracker particularly if you can put it into service mode. Not having to give them the fob is a fairly obvious thing.

However if don't want the risk it then having the factory Vodafone system retrofitted is your only choice.

Full disclosure I've got an aftermarket tracker fitted to my 718 but I'm still in the factory warranty period and willing to argue the toss.

Update

Rang classicline and they saying that they have no other insurers that will insure the car without a tracker and Vodafone have no idea how I have the fobs but no tracker. The car doesn’t appear on their systems

So I am left with the following options
1. Buy a tracker and subscription - likely to be £800 I guess with fitting via Porsche
2. Find another insurer - any recommendations on who does it without a tracker and provides a good level of cover ? Aviva seems like my best option.

Thanks

Go to another insurer ( admiral in my case) that doesn’t demand a tracker. They are a pain in the arse in my experience- each car I’ve had that had to have one fitted - I was constantly getting phone calls from Vodafone as I kept forgetting to put the tracker in my pocket - also some of the trackers are huge things to carry round ( the official Porsche one is anyway). Dump your insurer and the tracker !

Thanks is the admiral cover comparable to classic line or locktons ? Less worried about European cover or breakdown cover more about the quality of the policy and guaranteed value

Thanks

I paid £549 for the Tracker cat 5 ( driver fobs ) recently on 2 Audi’s but suspect Porsche will be more.
As to insurance maybe try a broker - they do all the work for you.
It can indeed be annoying and expensive to fit a tracker year one to find out that year 2 the same insurer doesn’t require it.

What is the exact insurance requirement?

I ask as maybe something like this is acceptable to them: https://www.tracker.co.uk/products/retrieve-batter...

Unless classicline have changed in last 8 months they require a cat S5 tracker not just a S7 level device (with driver identification fobs/tokens). So tracker retrieve battery wouldn’t be complaint.
