£20k EV - where would your money go?

Sister in law wants an EV (it will work well for her requirements) and has 20k budget, used not new.

I'm thinking Hyundai because of the 5 year warranty but open to suggestions.

I'm guessing there will be deals available given the market is free falling for these atm.

Any pitfalls, clocked ex private hire maybe?

I wouldn’t be too concerned about warranty on the long term personally, I have a Leaf and it’s been faultless. Also know of four others with zero issues over several years.

This is exactly the requirements I have for the OH, and I think I've narrowed it down to the Leaf.

A friend had one on lease for 3 years and said it was bombproof.

There have been some big price drops on them recently and £20k gets a 20 or 70-plate 40kWh N-Connecta with up to 15k miles.

40kWh means long motorway journeys are out of the question but we would just use my petrol Leon for those. OH only averages 135 miles a week so would be one charge per week in summer.

N-Connecta is a decent spec too.

BMW I3 (S) with range extender of trips are less than 150 mikes or so and little need for carrying back seat passengers. £20k xhoujf get you into a 94ah example.

Everyones requirements are different, however we’ve recently been looking to replace our Ioniq Electric which is coming to the end of its lease. After going round and round in circles we decided the second hand market is still far too expensive (unless you have the funds) and settled on a lease deal on a Peugeot e-2008.

If we were to go second hand it’d probably be another Ioniq Electric. Wouldn’t touch a Leaf (had one for three years) as they’re really old technology, both in battery management (lack of) and rapid charging (no ccs). We looked at many a Zoe too, but were put off by the large number of reported charging issues, especially with podpoint which we have at home.

That's useful, my concern regarding the leaf is it's old hat. The Ioniq is where I'm trying to point her, whether she listens or not is another thing.

Is that £20k cash or finance?

Things I’d want to consider if buying outright. What will it be worth when you come to sell it on and how easy would it be to sell?

EV tech is moving fairly rapidly. And an EV may well age far more than a petrol/diesel car.

I’d also want to be mindful of should you need to replace the battery. Or if it needs one at the point of resale.

I do wonder if leasing or even a PCP style purchase with a guaranteed end value might be a safer way of having an EV. Looking at it very much as an experience where you will hand the car back rather than keep outright.

Car is fantastic for everyday driving and if their daily commute is less than 100 miles, they will have no issue,
Car has some get up and go and the interior is fantastic to say its a Peugeot,
Carwow gave it a "buy it now" recommendation and as my daily i couldn't ask anything more of it,
my parents currently have a long range nissan leaf, and although the interior isnt quite as nice of the 208 its still a great car with great features (for £20k you should be able to get a top spec"

I've not looked at comparable petrol/diesel cars. But wouldn't that have been about £33k new or more depending on exact options. Now up for just over £19k at less less than 2 years old.

Best part of £14k depreciation in as many months?

Makes you wonder what it'd be worth in another 3-5 years time.

Kia Soul EV or an MG ZS are both available in budget with a few years of manufacturer warranty left. Nothing wrong with the Ioniq, other than it being a bit 'uber'. I'd be going Kia.

Go in with your eyes open on delivery times.

MG are the reason we're looking at Leafs. Have had a ZS EV on order since Feb 2022, original due date June and still absolutely no idea when (or if!) it is coming.

Anywhere showing delivery dates are total guesses.

If you're buying outright I'd seriously consider a PHEV/Hybrids as they're proving more popular on the used market than EV's, so they may make more sense.

You can lease a brand new Renault zoe for £270 a month (1+36, in stock) , with decent spec and a usable 200+ mile range, full warranty etc

Put the £20k in a 3 year fixed saver paying monthly interest of at least 4% (5% with barclays up to £5k) and it'll cost just over £200 a month, or £7200 over 3 years.

A £20k 2nd hand niro or i3 is likely to lose £7200 in depreciation alone, and then you have mot, repairs, servicing on top.

Quick revisit, it appears the Nissan Leaf is in prime position. There's an abundance of them with pre reg 72 plate cars available at £24k from main dealers or 1 yr old stuff around £20k which trades about £12k atm. I think we'll try for a pre reg at <£20k - about to find out just how desperate they are to shift em.
