I'm going to have a look at an '05 Carrera S tomorrow.

Realistically, how much is an OPC going to be prepared to haggle on this.

It's in Guards Red which I am aware is not a big seller. How much flexibility do you think they have?

Cheers.

- How much is it up at compared to other similar specced cars at other OPCs?

- How long have they had it?

- How many are about at the moment?

- How much is it anyway?

- Which dealership is it? (I've negotiated with 2 in the last week, and one was more obliging than the other!)

I've been looking at GT3s (and now RSs) of late and they aren't shifting too quickly so 2-3k off seems reasonable as an expectation depending on what price its up at compared to the others. I've also negotiated in the umbrella that goes into the door sill, a keystrap & 2 tickets to the festival of speed Porsche hospitality!

Of course an RS is a pricey car second hand and demand is slack at the moment. I can't really speak on Carrera S prices. There seem to be a lot of 997s in the network though.

Dan,

it seems pretty comparable with other cars of a similar spec and vintage to be honest.

It's at JCT600 in Leeds and I think they have had the car for a few weeks, maybe a bit longer.

It's on at £66995 and yes there do seem quite a few similar cars about. This, and the fact that the market for this type of car seems a bit slack at the moment, is why I thought there might be a chance of a deal.

Cheers

Neil.

Definitely make an offer! Look the worst that can happen is they will say no. More likely they will take the number and go talk to the dealer principle etc. Its easier if you do this by phone as you don't have to wait and put too much pressure on the deal. In my experience they just take the number and then call you back a bit later with a new offer. Rinse and repeat.

If you want extra things like the umbrella etc, negotiate them in at the end.

Just got back from the dealers.

Car looked grat in the metal. It really stood out from the rows of black, silver etc.

Offer now made, the inevitable, "I'll have to speak to my manger", now await their call.

Cheers

Neil.

You`ll be lucky to get a call back.

Go and see someone, look at the car, let them know you are genuinely interested and have no part exchange. Then liase with that specific person and use them as your point of reference.

The problem with phone callers is that the dealership will get hundreds every year. They will prioritise their efforts on those people who have put in more effort. It`s all well saying you can have a car for a penny but if the person hasn`t seen it yet what`s the point, they`ll only come along and decide the carpets are half a shade too dark and look for something else.

Henry,

good advise.

This is exaclty what I have done. I've been to the dealership and driven the car.

I'm dealing with the same sales guy and am waiting for his call.

I was working on the basis he'd been to see the car already and got a relationship with someone in sales. OPCs are very good at following up sales leads in my experience.

I can tell you really don't like this type of negotiation Henry! Then again you managed to sell my colleague a car without letting him test drive it. Personally I wouldn't have put up with that, so we'd never have got much further. Still more fool my colleague that he was willing to drive for several hours to get to you and put up with that!

Wow. Porsche saleman of the year would not have managed that with me.

If I had made an appointment to view and drive the car, which I always do, then no test drive would have provoked an almighty tantrum.

I suppose he would have done if the deal had been acceptable!

Do you think there is any more to be had?

When I bought my 993TT, which was up for £44K two years ago, I phoned the sales guy, got him to describe it, send over log book and other details, I did all my checking etc and told him I had £40K and not a penny more. If he chose to take it I'd be down 9am the next morning to buy it, no messing, no driving etc.
He phoned back at 5pm and said it's a done deal - my only problem was I couldn't sleep - I drove down that night and lusted through the window, but, true to my word and his the car was perfect and the first time I drove it was on the way home.
It later transpired that the dealer had given 37K in PX against an audi TT of all things and the previous owner was a secretary of PCGB

it SO true.. the little things really do count. i've done this on all my porsches... and it would have been a deal breaker on a point of principle as far as i was concerned.

I have to thank Tim (of titanic) for the tip off on the umbrella - I didn't even know they existed! As you say though, its the little things that count. They also threw in a bit of driver training. They've only got the deposit so far though, so I better not count my chickens!

Has he called you back yet?

For what its worth I rang a dealer the other day asking what they could do as I had a deal lined up on another car. They rang back once with a crap price. I wasn't too interested. 20 mins later they called back with a better price. Haven't taken them up though as my original deal is better.

He called earlier.

The "undoable" deal now seems possible.

He does have to speak to his manager in the morning.

We'll see.

All this bollox about phoning up and bidding people blind is great when you`re buying a (nearly) new car. The problem is that with a 10 or 15 year old car the difference between 2 individual cars is massive and unless you`ve seen the car you haven`t got a clue what it`s like.

Now you could have balls of steel and drive a hard bargain but what if the more expensive car is just the best one ever. You dismissed it outright purely on price. You`ll never know !!

Re: the test drives always happy for a customer to drive a car before they buy it, we just don`t hand test drives out like sweets. Would you like your car to have been kangaroo`d down the road by 15 would be test pilots before you buy it, it always makes me chuckle when someone says the car used to be owned by AFN (for example), with pride as though that was a good thing ! I know I certainly had an invigourating test in the new Boxster S we were loaned the other day. Once the back breaks away it surely does power slide like a good-un. On a straight line you`ve really got to give it some welly and drop the clutch nice & sharp to get the tyres to light up but once there just keep the old girl bouncing off the rev limiter and she`ll pop doughnuts as good as any pick-up I`ve driven.

Looking forward to the Porsche Festival this weekend. see you all there.

The car I'm talking about is 4 months old and is one of c50 similar ones on the Porsche website.

This is why I thought that there was a fair bit of room for negotiation.
