Just replied in a thread about my old Mini Cooper S - I really miss that supercharger!

I'm aware of the Yaris GRMN which I believe is supercharged, but has there been other hot hatches with them made in the last 10-15 years!? Only other cars I can think of are big expensive coupes/saloons from Jaguar and some American beasties. Great cars in their own right I'm sure, but not really my bag.

Turbos are more efficient on small engines now that they're able to run small turbines that don't lag so much.

There was a Corolla with a supercharged 1.8 2zz engine. But probably just over 15 years ago now.

Lotus have used them to spectacular effect in recent years. Can't think of much in hatch terms other than the aforementioned Toyotas.

The S5 Sportback had a supercharged V6 relatively recently didn't it? Does that count as a "hot hatch"? smile

When did VW's twin-charged 1.4 go out of production?

My Volvo T8 has a Turbo- and Supercharged engine (+ 48V starter motor boost + electric rear axle).
It does have a rather nice supercharger whine, although relatively subtle.

The MiL has a Nissan Note DIG-S which is a Supercharged 1.2, it's far from a hot hatch though!

Housemate had one, absolutely lovely noise. And it really did drag it's self forwards like a stabbed rat when you booted it too!

About 15 minutes after the first warranty claims. There's a good reason you never see any MK2 VRS Fabias anymore but plenty of mk1s remain.

My F-Pace SVR uses the afford mentioned Supercharged V8.

Having had turbos for much of the last 25 years it is a more subtle tool behind the wheel, very different characteristics, but really suits the car (which is definitely not subtle.)

The s/c whine at the upper rev range is addictive (and drowns out the noise of the fuel pump.....unless it IS the fuel pump I can hear.....)

I had one, from memory they were £20K new, but soon dropped to £14K. Woolly handling, woolly gearchange, poor performance and 27MPG, lasted a year then sold on... Last I heard they issues locating suspension parts that kept them off the road.

My OH has a Mercedes CLK with the supercharged 1.8.

It is not remotely interesting.

I think they put the same engine in the E class, which must have felt like a lot of car for the engine.

Is that more due to the '1.8' part of the equation than the 'supercharged'?

My Elise is also a supercharged 1.8, but it made 192ps without the supercharger and 220ps with it. The Mercedes makes 163ps with it!

Is this the 'CAVE' engine, just done some googling as I wasnt aware of it till now.

Appears there are are issues with piston failure, ring failure, high oil consumption, loss of compression, often attributed to misfires, due to the wrong plugs fitted, maybe, also oil breather software? But as you say, very quickly swapped for a 1.6 turbo without the supercharger!

Smaller pulley would sort that.

Lots of stuff in the US still uses superchargers, most recently the Cadillac Escalade-V.

Must admit I have a soft spot for a supercharger, I have an M45 from a Mini on my MX5, its makes a ridiculous noise in the cabin laugh
