Is it a fail if one or more of the high level brake light LED's have failed? I have a VW T5 in a workshop having engine work done, its MOT will come due before I get it back and the garage agreed to put it through once they've completed their work. I can fix the high level brake light but the workshop won't let me work on the van in their facility

I've had an advisory in the past where some LEDs have failed in a High Level Brake light.

Some MOT testers frequent this thread therefore it may be worth asking the question on there.

I haven't been an MOT tester for fifteen years but when I was, the high level brake light not working at all was a pass as you didn't know if it was even connected, but only some of the LEDs working make it obvious that its faulty and becomes a failure.

One or two LEDs out isn't a fail. Possibly an advisory.

He's probably doing you a favour due to its age.

It wasn't working on my 2000 Boxster back in 2019 and the MoT tester asked me if it was 'ahem' connected. If not, it doesn't have to work on an older car. smile

From the manual:

"Additional stop lamps, over and above the obligatory requirements, must be tested. However, if you are not sure that they’re connected, you should give the benefit of the doubt."
