997.1 TARGA 4S MT vs 997.1 TARGA S MT vs 981 Cayman S PDK:
Discussion
hello everyone, there are 3 used porsches for sale in my town in Italy, and I would like to buy one, but I can't decide.
Can you give me some advice (or tell me what would you do if you were me), also in relation to the price.
1) Porsche 997.1 TARGA 4S Black / Black, Manual, with a not original Sport PSE and 15hp mod., no chrono package.
85749 Miles. year: 2007.
Price: 59.000 EUR (63.130 USD)
The car has had 2 owners, the second one took it 18 months ago and put 22,000 miles on it.
It apparently has no bore scoring or IMS problems, but before the final purchase the seller is now willing to do all the necessary checks (bore scope inspection).
Services: the car had 5 regular coupons from 2007 to 2017, then the car was idle for a few years until 2021. In 2021 it was serviced by the new owner who had a service every 6200 miles.
Aesthetic defects: the front headlights are opaque (could it be condensation? I don't know). There are a few surface scratches, but nothing serious. The interior is well maintained overall. Two wheels have scratches.
2) Porsche 997.1 TARGA 4 NOT S, Grey / Black, Manual, with the original Sport PSE and the original sports equipment (oversized brakes), with carbon interior trim.
No chrono package.
46000 Miles. year: 2007.
Price: 63.000 EUR (67.410 USD)
The car has had 3 owners. It apparently has no bore scoring or IMS problems, but before the final purchase the seller is now willing to do all the necessary checks (bore scope inspection).
Services:
2009 year, with miles: 17087 (1° tagliando)
2011 year, with miles: 20505
2013 year, with miles: 30283
2014 year
2015 year, with miles: 37740
2020 year, with miles: 4200
2023 year, with miles: 46000
Aesthetic defects: There are a few surface scratches, but nothing serious. The car seems brand new.
the cons: it is the highest priced car, it is not an S, it has a somewhat hard clutch (but the seller said he will replace it before delivering it to me), and the glass mechanism has some creaking is rattling (sometime)
3) Porsche 981 S PDK, 2014 year: Yellow outside, dark red leather inside, seats with memory 14 way, carbon trim, chrono, PASM, PSE.
Price: 49.000 EUR (=52.430 USD). Perfect interior, has some scratches on the 4 wheels
Services: 1 service each year
About the Cayman I like that it is a more visceral driving experience because of the mid-engine behind the driver. On the downside: it is not a 911
the cons: If the interior were black it would be the perfect car in my opinion, but they are dark red. I personally also like them red, but this may make it more difficult tomorrow to resell the car ( and for me the possibility of reselling the car in the future is a very important factor )
Please, can you give me some advice (or tell me what would you do if you were me)?
Thanks a lot

Depends if you want a 997 or a cayman. Both great cars that drive very well. The mid engine cayman has a better balance but the 911 will push you out of corners I’ve owned both of these.
Gen 1 997s do have engine issues and cayman doesn’t have those issue.
Depends on your attitude towards the risk of the engine having issues whilst you own it.
I’d drive both of these and decide which one you prefer.

Assuming you don't care about
1. not having a 911
2. the rear seats (children)
3. not having the glass / panoramic roof
then the Cayman. Why? Because its the newer car, more reliable engine and also the cheapest.
You also seem to like the colour and the driving experience.

That red interior against the yellow, surely not? Each to their own I guess.
Those 911s appear to be overpriced, but then I’m in the UK. Have you tried looking at the German market to see what you can get?
In italy (and in europe) the 911 TARGAs have a big premium over the standard coupe 911Those 911s appear to be overpriced, but then I’m in the UK. Have you tried looking at the German market to see what you can get?
This 2 TARGAs that I found have great prices in the current market.

About the 981:
yes the yellow / red colour can be a problem for the future resale, together with the fact that the car was initially registered in the Arab Emirates, but in relative terms the price is not bad.

Get the Yellow Cayman. It is still in the mix as it is still in your head and heart. Follow both and get what you obviously really wanted from the get go on the other thread.
yes, it is my head and in my heart, but for example my wife told me that she doesn't like the mix yellow / red..RiccardoG said:
