Small New (or nearly new) Cars?

I keep considering changing cars but pretty much anything and everything I've seen that's £6-7K seems to be an utter shed which has me looking at new or nearly new cars and being tempted to go and have a look at a Hyundai i10 and Toyota Aygo X.
Not a very PistonHeads choice but £13-14K ish and brand new and with up to 10 year warranty they caught my eye when six year old Minis and Fiestas are going for silly money.
What are these like on dual carriageways if you just need to do a 10 mile commute at 60-70mph in something with a good warranty that's hopefully pretty much bombproof and costs peanuts to run a couple of days a week?

It's an option but even those seem to have crept up to where sure they're still cheap but they're up against some very good options from the likes of Kia and Hyundai I guess you just get a bigger car as the entry model.
It's frustrating as I think I've got to that point where a car is almost "white goods" transport and I see all sorts and think "I like that" and I could buy pretty much anything I wanted price wise but I just cannot justify £20-30K on something for how much use it gets.
And does anyone know if there's a way to exclude the pages of annoying Cazoo ads from Autotrader?

We ran a series of 107s a while ago. Very good too, happily run one as a daily, downside it had a very tall 5th gear, motorway inclines required a downshift to 4th so irritating on long runs.
Wife now has a Dacia Duster, I've adopted her old car a previous shape i20. Both good, serviceable cars that do whatever I ask of them. The i20 has marginally better equipment, ergonomics and handling.
Duster is bigger, more comfortable, better visibility.
On reflection I prefer the Hyandai, wife prefers the Duster.

I hadn't appreciated that even brand new small engine cars can be (and are) £165 road tax.
Not a show stopper but seems slightly odd that a 1L brand new car costs more to tax than an eight year old 1.3L car.
Anyone know how to get that itch out of your system when you've got a perfectly adequate car already

You can get a new Mazda 2 for just under £15k, which is a bit more car for the money than an i10 or a Aygo X.

The i10 seemed what I expected which is basic white goods and the Aygo seemed really plastic and flimsy.
Made the mistake of popping to Audi and found myself rather taken with the basic entry level A1.
It's very easy to keep thinking "just another few grand" and it's also very easy to lose sight that what I'm driving now is perfectly decent and £500 to sort the alloys and get new pads and discs (slight judder when braking so it's hopefully discs) and I don't actually need to do anything more.
I wonder how many millions or billions the UK waste on cars just because people fancy a change
In many ways you're right. Most people don't need to change their cars. I'm in a similar position where I just like to change every 3 years but there really is nothing wrong with the car I have. It's made more difficult by todays very high prices.
However I think there is a lot of choice somewhere between a new car and a shed. If you're looking for small and economical it should be possible to find a nice car for say £10k. Might even find something interesting for that too.

Yes. Fit a decent, amped, stereo system and nice speakers to your perfectly adequate car - preferably fitted by yourself, so there's a bit of blood invested as well as money.Then, every time to itch arrives, you'll start to think of the hassle involved in removing the whole system from your current car and possibly fitting it to the new one.

I paid 7k for a Seat Mii with 14k on the clock.£20 Road tax
60+Mpg
It had two years Seat warranty, 2 years Seat assist.
Certainly not a shed, it was in almost like new condition.
Daughter's also had an UP for the last 5 years, son has a Citigo.
None of them have gone wrong, just needed servicing.
If you just want a town car, something simple, they're great.
Only £20 RFL up to April 2017, but plenty of really low mileage one's for sale pre that date.

I've not looked at Hyundais, but the i10 is the same basic car as the Kia Picanto.The i10 seemed what I expected which is basic white goods and the Aygo seemed really plastic and flimsy.

I ran a Picanto GT-Line S 1 litre for 2 years as my "runabout" car. Decent little thing, and as far from "basic white goods" as you can get in a small car this side of an Aston Martin Cygnet. Heated seats and steering wheel, 4 electric windows, folding mirrors, climate, nav, reversing camera, electric sunroof, wireless phone charger, etc. Quite nippy too, with a 99bhp turbo 3-pot motor. Not sure what more one could want in such a small car.
OK so I went to Availablecar and had a good look around and honestly didn't find myself drawn to anything.
I think I might have reached peak "white goods motoring".
I then went to Mazda and had a look at the new Mazda 2 and had a test drive and I have to say I was bloody impressed.
Demonstrator was a two/three year old model and it's chalk and cheese compared to the one I'm in and just so much nicer than the Toyota and Hyundai models at the same prices.
It won't set the world on fire performance wise but should be cheap to run and hopefully as reliable as you'd expect.
Really impressed and with some of the deals that are on it should be < £10K to go brand new probably just with metallic paint.
So firstly I need to pick through the details on the Mazda website as it was all a bit impromptu but I'd appreciate any thoughts on the Mazda 2.
And a bit of an afterthought but obviously everything at Availablecar is unlocked which great as it's hassle free browsing but I found myself sitting in even Golf 7's thinking "this is bloody massive inside". And I've had a Golf 7
Is that just what happens when you spend long enough driving something smaller?
