Might be a strange question, i'm after an external hard drive (about 100gig) but are there ones avaliable that have an ethernet port so that I can plug it straight into my network?

Thanks,

Phill

these are becoming very popular - just try your favourite supplier and type HNAS or Home NAS or just NAS into the search tool and see what it brings back.

ebuyer have this one to start with, obviously depends how much you want to spend.

Cheers

If you want more expansion and backup you could get a usb drive (cheaper than nas drives) and a linksys nslu2 that will mount them on the network.

Be wary, the freecom one may be one that requires software installed, rather than being a true network drive. It means for somethings like ghosting a boot disk it may be impossible to do.

Sounds like a good solution. I'll have a look around the net!

Thanks,

Can't believe noone's mentioned Buffalo LinkStation:
www.buffalotech.com/products/product-detail.php?productid=36&categoryid=16

and it has 2 USB ports so, connected to a wireless router, it also enables wireless printing.

Lacie Bigger Disk I think you can run as a NAS box.

1Tb on 4 250Gb drives.

I'd ressurect an old PC and sling a small amount of linux on it though to be honest.

A colleague just bought the 120Gb Buffalo Linkstation from his local PCWorld for about £130ish - they declared him to be a business customer, as *I think* they're 'business' stock.

Plus you can plug in another drive to one of the USB ports when you fill up the one that's there Had one for a while, top piece of kit.

Is there any reason why you couldn't you use the linkstation as your main hard drive for two pc's (a desktop and laptop sharing a wireless network - if you wanted to?)

you could use one as your 'main drive' i.e. a shared drive for storage, but you wouldnt want to try to boot off and run an OS off a network drive - it would be too slow

This would go wrong in so many ways I can't begin to tell you! MFT is stored in RAM for a good amount of the time...I'm sure you can work out the rest....

I have a Buffalo Linkstation, it was about 125 quid from PC World. It's absolutely brilliant for sharing files (once setup), assuming you have a modicum of computer savvy to get things going on the clients. It does not require any client software to be installed, other than the OS. Two downsides are how slow and clunky the web interface is and how noisy the whole unit is, when in use. My tip if you buy one is to ensure you give it a static IP on your network. Life got a whole lot easier configuring firewalls once I did that.
