The older I get, the less "new" supercars with gazillion BHP and endless electronics interest me. Even the designs leave me a little cold now.

For me, I think the way forward is a classic body, but with mechanics that have been brought into 2023 and that you can really push without having to be oversympathetic to the car's age. The Singer DLS is the car I'd have with my lottery win, but it really is out of reach at £1.5m!

What retromods are there for a max of £400,000?

Alfaholics GTA-R cloud9

I would love to spec one with a breathed on Busso V6...

Yes it would be heavier than the usual GTA-R but the noise would make up for it.

Would probably have enough change to buy something else silly as well....

Something from Mechatronik for me although I don't think €500k will touch the sides....

Or failing that, this E9 with the 3.2 six 240hp S52 from an M3

I reckon that Retropower could probably make you something like those Mercs for about that budget. Their Kaiser builds are very nice.

IMO the point of a restomod is to take a car you like but couldn’t live with and make it better. So what car do you like OP?

I have plans for a thousand projects in my head but I think the one that’s in front at the moment is getting a 70s Lagonda and making it work right.

This Bristol 411 is £137,500. Leaving plenty of budget to make it go faster...

no one in the trade is going to turn away a naïve punter with 400k burring a hole in her pockets but be aware these deep fakes are disastrous investments as they have no authenticity and so no value, and they also tend to go wrong a lot very quickly and you have no comeback.

For the people who did this £400k is their weekly farming profit - it's just a game.

Are you that type?

I think you mean "restomod", not retromod.

You can't commission a 'full' Eagle E-Type for that budget, but there are cars with fairly significant Eagle upgrades available:

The E-Type is quite a good intersection of 'definitely a classic' with reasonably competent roadholding and performance, even as standard.

I dunno though, is avoiding the crunches on nine shifts out of ten worth losing the absolute joy and satisfaction when you get the revs and timing just right, and nail that one perfect 3rd-to-2nd downshift in an original Moss box??

If you want a car you can drive hard, this one rebuilt into a Lightweight has raced, so probably won't fall apart on a Sunday morning thrash

This guy has spent 'six figures' having a company restomod an Esprit S2. I think this is a good candidate, because it's one of those cars where the basic concept is perhaps better than the slightly low-budget execution.

On the Lotus note, I find this Europa with a 20B rotary a mouthwatering prospect, although no idea on cost or what it would take to talk RE Amemiya into making another:
http://www.speedhunters.com/2013/01/rotary-buzz-re...
700kg, ~300 N/A horsepower, that addictively smooth power of a rotary, and an engine that fits into the same envelope as the original.

I'm the "type" to buy a Singer 911 over most normal 911s. I'm the also type to buy an Alfaholics GTA-R over most normal GTAs. I'm the type to buy an Eagle e-tye over most normal e-types.

Would I be the type to buy a Paul Stephens 911 or a Theon Design 911? Possibly, but definitely not at what they seem to cost at list.

I don't particularly appreciate being called naive and if that was your intention, it makes you out to be of a certain "type".

Do the mods correct typos, grammatical errors and misunderstandings as part of the service on a free forum?

What have they been doing?

A punter can't change the title of a thread .. only a mod can; so if you want it done, you ask one.

Absolutely no idea of how much these things cost to build but I think I’d be knocking on the door of Retropower and asking them about creating any one of the following:

Karmann Ghia with Porsche flat 6 or Subaru flat 4
Alfa SZ with supercharged Busso V6
Ur Quattro with RS3 motor
Jag XJC with XJR supercharged V8
Properly built Sagaris with LS

I find that ugly engine really jarring in that pretty body shell.
