I need help.
My daughter bought her first car, we know nothing about cars and had no one to help.
Bought what we thought was a great little first car. Needed a new tyre, but that was ok.
It wouldn’t start this morning and she called out the RAC. They said it needs a new battery, but also that the exhaust is about to fall off.
It was MOT’d 19/12/22 and passed with no advisories. Looking online this MOT centre has very dodgy reviews (about passing cars that should fail). I believe the garage she bought the car from always use this mot centre, and there’s possibly a connection between the 2 businesses.
The car has a 3 month warranty, so should be covered (hopefully).
I don’t know how to approach this with the garage? The MOT centre/repair garage they use….I don’t want them to ‘fix’ the car as there’s clearly issues with their work. They also intimidate customers who complain (allegedly).
Can anyone advise me? I feel so angry and upset that my daughter has spent so much money on a car that’s a crock. Any assistance would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance

The problems you may face are that batteries and exhausts are typically consumable, so you’re likely going to have a fight on your hands to get them to cough up in relation to these items.

If that’s all that was wrong (plus the tyre) then it’s likely not worth the argument.

What's the car and how much did you pay for it?

Sorry to hear this, buying cars can be a nightmare.

If you don’t know anything about cars and have nobody to take with you then you need to use an AA inspection or something like that.

Doesn't really sound like a crock to be honest.
Ask the garage for assistance with the exhaust ? - it's a first car so I assume something small and economical ? Go to Kwik Fit and get an exhaust popped on it.

What is the car, what year is it, how long have you had it, when was the mot done, how much did she pay, is there any finance on it?

The failure to start plus the exhaust issue has obviously made you worry about the condition of the car.

If you're concerned, I'd try to find a local garage you can trust and ask them to check the car over for you and do a written report of any problems. That way you know the car's overall condition and how far the issues go.

If it's just battery and exhaust it's probably not worth the hassle trying to get the dealer to repair it, as said, better to take it elsewhere and know it's done properly I'd feel.

For any future purchases, for a fee the AA and RAC will do a pre-purchase inspection, which would probably pick up issues like the rotten exhaust before you buy. I appreciate that doesn't help now though.

These aren’t really big problems car wise.
The car will be fine after the exhaust is looked at. It could need something quite simple doing to make it better attached.

Thank you all.
Yes, I am worried, worried that she’s bought a crappy car…..but I don’t know anything about them so maybe panicking (a lot).
It’s a Corsa, a 59 plate.
It was looking online at the MOT centre, and all its reviews said it’s dodgy/passes cars that should fail, and I’m worried that she’s got a car that’s unsafe.
I’m sure there’s a reputable garage here I can take it to and get them to check it over. She’s realising the cost of having a car!

These are consumables on older cars.

I recently bought a Toyota MR2 for my son, believing the seller was genuine.

Within ten miles, it threw a check engine light - new O2 sensor required and I've just spent 3 days replacing the front brake rotors and pads but I know what I'm doing. It's no excuse to say you know nothing about cars, I know nowt about houses so have to have a survey.

Used cars are a minefield. I know about cars but got duped and now I have to pay to put it all right.

if you want it checked for safety etc then you could do worse than just putting it in for an MOT with the local council MOT station. You'll get an unbiased check over and for a minimal fee.

Brake rotors are brake discs…it is a common name for them.

They are called Rotors in America.
The internet, it’s a global thing.
