choice l4 turbo petrol vs l6 turbo diesel
Discussion
I plan to buy a car from the 90s-2000s, and I find myself in a situation where it is difficult for me to make a choice. I already have a n/a v6 engine and I want to buy a turbo vehicle from those years. I looked into the 6 cylinder turbo petrol and either it's over budget or the rest of the car doesn't appeal to me at all. the remaining cars that I like are either 4-cylinder turbo petrol or a Bimmer L6 turbo diesel.
I'm not a fan of diesel but I'm not a fan of 4 cylinders. sound level I even feel that the l6 d sounds better than the l4 concerned! when is it approved, which will be the most flexible, etc. I don't know what to choose.
the cars concerned petrol:
fiat t16 or lancia dedra t16: lampredi engine.
Forester xt 2.0-2.5: ej engine
saab 9000 2.3t.
diesel:
330d e46 -530d e39: m57
525 tds e34: m51
I suspect the l4t's feel faster but I'm looking for something nice on the ear and smooth that feels turbocharged, without being very capable.

the nissan 300 zx i really like but the price is too high. there was the audi a6 2.7t but i don't like audi... s14, s13 way too expensive. v6 busso,164 and 166 I have trouble with the style... the exterior of the 164 pleases me enough but the interior not at all. and the 166 does not please me from the outside and the inside except the seats
to tell the truth in the bmw I lean especially for the 525 tds e34 I absolutely like the style of this bimmer. and the m51 feels turbocharged and with a remap its running pretty good apparently.
approval level a flat 4 or l4 petrol will be better? than the l6d

I had a 9000 2.3
Great car, I can't say enough good things about the performance, the ride, the motorway fuel economy and build quality. Very resistant to rust as well.
Very very cheap and easy to tune for more power, you can bolt on most of the parts from the HOT models and easy to map.
The one big weak point is the exhaust manifold, it gets very corroded and the small bolts holding it to the head can start to fail, and they are a pig to remove.
They don't get the power down in the wet at all in the lower gears, but other than that are very quick indeed.

The BMW E34 tds engines don't make much sense these days as they were only marginally more economical than the equivalent petrols - when they were current diesel was cheaper than petrol. Now the opposite is the case so will be probably be more expensive to run than a petrol
The tds engine was very smooth though. However fairly sure the injection system was at least partly mechanical so not sure if a simple remap is even possible

I had the opportunity to experience a 6-cylinder bmw diesel once, and I found the "6-cylinder" side the smoothness, yes there is the slamming at idle (different from a 4 cylinders all the same) and not much mode but the sound and the flexibility are there and I preferred it to the wrx 2.5t more furious and yet soft, but the sound I do not like. however it did not make the classic sub noise.
I'm afraid of being disappointed with the l4 levels of comfort and softness even against a diesel with 6 cylinders...
fuel economy is not a concern, as the car won't be driven much.
my favorite remains the e34 which is made like a tank. this is only a personal opinion but this sedan is in my top.

The m57 is an epic engine for a diesel imo. Kickdown shove is immense. Continuous surge towards the horizon. The 530d did get a little flat toward the higher revs however. The smoothness of my friends 525tds (manual) is what got me interested in the all-rounder bmw 6 pot diesels. I also remember the m57 sounding far nicer in the e39 than the e60. Not sure why.
4pot turbos don't tend to spool up quickly, as a result they have a very "fun" boosty feel. Haven't driven a Saab, but I remember being unable to shake a few that were glued to the tail of the 200sx.

My advice is to buy something that you are an enthusiast about because otherwise you will get bored of it pretty quickly and the hassle and cost of keeping it on the road will start to become a chore.
Your list is extremely diverse suggesting you like those cars but aren’t passionate about any of them.
Things like Saab 9000’s have a certain appeal but keeping one long term requires serious beard.

i agree, bmw diesels are in a league of their own. the m57 in the e90 works really well.
old school l4t's are violent and the power delivery is aggressive it's fun I admit. but I am looking for the more refined of the two between l4 turbo petrol and l6d bimmer. so far i have found the l6d to be the winner, but maybe there are other more refined petrol l4s with a nice sound

I understand, but the 4 cylinders I never liked their sound... and their somewhat rough operation bothers me
otherwise bought a better engine, but a car that I like less. or bought the e34 NA but wanted some turbo things... the choice is not so simple. the other cars on the list don't appeal to me as much as the e34.
