A few quick crops of a selection from todays 100th anniversary event at Shelsley Walsh. The lighting (lots of light/shade transitions), viewing distance (it was more than a bit crowded) and speed all proved to be a match for me and my 4 yr old camera, so the best results tended to be the slowest movers:

A clipped wing Spitfire showed up mid-afternoon and performed some very graceful lazy rolls and loops for us all:

I'm not quite sure what the thinking is behind this one :silly:

(I think I can feel a 20D + IS lense coming on...)

Saturday was far better for taking photos, i got about 250 done in the morning before the battery went. Hardly anyone there comapred to sunday, so i could stand right at the front of the banking at Esses. I'll sort through and post up the decent ones.

I was expecting the competitive day (Sat) to attract the bigger crowds, so deliberately picked the Sunday. How wrong I was...

Biggest crowd I've ever seen at Shelsley (bigger than the MAC 100 in 2001). Great day, great weather (great beer too!).

I could only make it on the Saturday, but I managed to stand about four feet away from the Auto Union when it was starting up in the paddock. I felt the exhaust in my face and my ears are still ringing but it was an unforgettable experience

Poor photography skills and a cheap camera meant most of my photos were taken of stationary cars in the paddock or car park. Could anyone let me have a shot of the Auto Union in action?

I was stood next to the noise judge about 2 feet away while they were trying to get it started. Wondered why everyone had tehir fingers in their ears.... then it fired properly. Matey's noise meter recorded 130dB.

I've finally got my Shelsley photos online. There are a few of the Auto Union on there.

I'm much happier with them than my last effort, but any criticism would be appreciated.

I thik you were defeated not by your camera but by your position - the cars look fine but there's always a foreground full of people or trees! My instinct would be to get down on the other side and shoot from verge level, but maybe this was impossible.

Unless you were prepared to be brutally pushy, or spend hours in one spot gradually working your way to the front, people were always going to be in the way. On the rare occassion that the framing was perfect, I think the blurred spectators improves the pictures.

The other side was strictly out of bounds to all but marshalls.

Where was 185, and where were you when that pic was taken? I'm struggling to work out were on the hill you could get that shot from that angle (or was he going down the hill at the time - it's hard to tell) ?

He's going up the hill. He was approaching bottom S and I was standing half way between bottom S and top S about 3 metres back above the highest set of wooden benches. The 400mm lens helped here.

I suspected that might be so. In that case, you did the best you could from where you were.

Who wants to see a whole car anyway?
