Hi All

Picking up my new to me GTS (MY23) tomorrow. First Porsche ever, My Porsche id account is all set up, tracker activated etc. Do I need the Porsche data package to have access to all on the on board toys. It is quite expensive for 7GB a month so interested to know if it is necessary or can everything work using the phone data?

Thanks

Josh

Hi, congrats!

I have a 991.2 and inserted an EE Data Sim in the slot to handle the tracker, map updates etc.

The only time I signed up for the Porsche data package was when we spent a couple of months in Italy and forgot that it wasn't international

thanks. so with your own sim you have all the functionality? Handing over a RRS as part ex and I have a sim in that I could just transfer.

Your GTS will have a SIM pre installed in the PCM which you cannot remove and that will give you everything you need for the first 3 years of ownership. It has nothing to do with the Tracker service which you will have to pay for each year starting at delivery if you want/need to activate it. After 3 years Porsche Smart Mobility will invite you to renew the services like Navigation, etc. No need to waste any extra cash on a third party data sim unless you plan to stream video or any other type of data hungry service to a device in the car. The built in SIM has enough data to handle all the standard services that the PCM provides I have no idea what its size is but I have never had an issue. Prior to Model year 2018 you had to provide your own SIM but that all changed right across the range, 911, 718 etc, from that model year to include the built in SIM.

The built in SIM serves a number of Porsche built-in services that need data, e.g. remote lock/unlock; OTA map updates (when they work); streamed Google maps nav and satellite photo data; live traffic data. What it won't do, unless you buy the Porsche package, is provide a data connection to the car's wifi hotspot or online music services like Amazon Music. I use an ID Mobile SIM for that which costs me about 9 quid a month for 12GB of data, IIRC, far cheaper than the £30 or so that Porsche want for their data package.

The only quirk with using your own SIM is that the PCM then uses that account for all online data, so things like nav data and other built in services consume my external SIM's monthly data allowance. In practice that isn't a problem, as you only get a 600MB map update once a quarter, and the other services aren't data heavy, so it's not as if I feel cheated by losing out on some data that would be free using the built in SIM.

Hope that makes sense!

THANKS. Much appreciated.

Just picked it up and had my first drive ever in a Porsche. Fantastic! Anyway I asked about the Sim and was told at the dealer that the MY23 GTS does not have an external sim slot. Taken them at their word but I can't see one either. If anyone can point me differently that would be great. I have paid for the internal sim data for a month.
