It is a simulator, so you will need to follow a tutorial to get them moving and not all functions are explained so some Googling involved. Stopping is the biggest issue but I assume that’s representative of real trains.
The only downside is the constant add ins being £20 or so. If they start enjoying the game it can get quite expensive.

Very much a simulator rather than just playing with trains. I wouldn't recommend it for a kid. It isn't something you can just pick up and play, lots of learning and remembering all the procedures and buttons around the train to get the things moving and stopping.
Not for the casual player. I downloaded it a few months back, spent about 2 evenings on it and got rid.
It is very good from a technical standpoint and showing you everything driving a train is about but everything takes ages to do, make a mistake and takes ages to sort, not really an exciting game to play more just something to pass the time. Feels more like taking an exam than playing a fun game lol.

The Tube Train is about the most basic but even once you twiddle all the right knobs to get the sorted stop go and cruise have about 8 different settings, you have to stop in the right place and open and close the doors and then try and do it all on time while not busting any speed limits and obeying signs. If you get to the end of the line and have to turn around yo have to switch ends of the train so power down the end you are at then open close a whole train worth of double doors until you get to the far end and start all over again.
The freight trains you have to walk around rail yards connect up everything you need, worry about signals and changing points, load from hoppers etc etc getting stopping distances right with them is something that will take way more time that I ever have to put into it.
It would be good if there was like an arcade mode where you could just accelerate and brake and they both happened a bit quicker. I'd probably play it a bit then.

I've got a train sim. They are well made, and accurate enough that it's useful for an occasional rough route refreshing tool for the lines I actually drive. Haven't booted it up in a while though.
Fun? No. Not unless you are an enthusiast/spotter or something.
After a while I usually get bored, cause a massive crash and then turn it off.
