Hi,

I've just installed linux (ubuntu) on my laptop. Could someone give me a brief run down of how I install software packages on to the machine?

The first one I'm trying to install is java from sun. I have the choice of downloading on of the following...

Linux RPM in self-extracting file - jdk-1_5_0_04-linux-i586-rpm.bin
Linux self-extracting file - jdk-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.bin

I tried the first one and tried installing it from the command line with...

% rpm -i filename

...but it said it was an invalid file.

Is there a gui based package installation tool that I should be using or am I going about this the wrong way. I've tried using the ubuntu package manager but can't seem to get that to point that to my file.

Sorry for what is probably an easy question.

Regards,

Mark

I'm a bit of a linux noob, but have found this site really useful when messing about with Ubuntu.

Sounds strange, having a .bin extention and all that. Did they come from the Sun site or with ubuntu? Did the browser stick the .bin extention on as it saved them? In which case, you could try just renaming them back to .rpm and trying again.

Can you get Java installed by using Synaptic? Might be much easier.

From what i've read you should install the sun-j2re1.5 and java-package packages using apt-get (sudo apt-get install <packages>
Then use the make-jpkg (from java-package) script to convert the .bin file you downloaded to a .deb. This can then be installed using dpkg (sudo dpkg -i <package>
OR
you should just be able to run the self-extracting binary:
chmod a+x jdk-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.bin
sudo ./jdk-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.bin

there is a nice guide for installing on debian here, it should be exactly the same for ubuntu: www.crazysquirrel.com/computing/debian/java.jspx

In general you shouldn't be using .rpm's on ubuntu as it's a .deb based distribution. There are plenty of guides (again, debian based) on how to use apt

edit: forgot ubuntu doesn't have a root user
