I'm usually fairly self motivated and positive but have found myself in a bit of a downer lately and have been poking around looking for mantras or "rules" to help structure my head and my thinking a bit more. I'd say, up until now, I used to go by the 3 basic rules of :

1) The thought of doing something is worse than doing it (usually to get me to go to the dentist!)
2) Think before you speak (I've said things in haste in the past I've deeply regretted and don't want to do that again)
3) Be upbeat even when you don't feel like it (mainly for the kids as happy kids will usually get me through a rough day)

I realise this is all a bit happy clappy but I used to find that if I can anchor bad thoughts onto one of these rules things usually worked out OK.

Anyway, I was selfishly looking for inspiration from others as these don't seem to be working as well as they used to - any motivational gurus out there willing to share some new "rules"?

Sounds pretty ttish but “if there is a doubt, there is no doubt”

I try and keep to that - especially when spending money on silly stuff. If there’s even the slightest thought I don’t really want it - I don’t want it.

Works across the board too.

Not a rule per se, but I always try to keep in mind the outcome or upside of doing something, rather than the short term pain of the work involved. Decorating, mowing the lawn, getting a painful tooth looked at, losing weight or getting fitter, whatever it is - the outcome is the important bit to focus on, not the journey to get there.

This is quite good

You can read the chapter titles on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_Rules_for_Life but the why of them is the useful bit.

I completely agree with this. If it doesn't feel right, then it isn't.

My personal one is "all the time you're looking back, you can never move forwards...."

Already some good suggestions. I believe everything happens for a reason - which has taken me through some dark times to get to happier times which has made the past make more sense. Exclusions obviously apply.

I have to say that this usually rings true but in some cases, you have to just go with it and sometimes that bit of doubt can be cancelled out, especially with decisions that are multi threaded e.g career change, moving house etc.

I had a doubt when making a recent car purchase and still went with it. I'm still having doubts about it now 6 weeks though so there is credence to it.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice,

If in doubt don't.

The first thought every morning needs to be "today will be a great day" if you get in the habit of doing it then it becomes natural…I remind myself every morning before my feet hit the ground.

It’s never wrong to do the right thing.
Taught to me by my late dear friend and mentor. Used many times in the years since and has always been right.
