Gas and electricity bills comparison
Discussion
Octopus Energy have a slight discount to the price cap, but I don't think are very keen to take new customers.
Having read about some customers of other energy suppliers, being unable to select their own monthly payments, or recover excessive credit balances, Octopus do seem to be a good firm to deal with.

They are all the same at the moment, charging the price cap rates, which are going to rise in April. After that we may return to competitive pricing later in the year.

Gas has tumbled to £120 which while still high is only double the 20 year average so they may opt to not raise the cap in April or if they do, maybe only for higher users. Maxwell
As others have mentioned probably not much choice but to stick with your existing supplier
What I will admit to is for the first time, I actually see high prices do alter or moderate our use.
I just submitted our August to End of Feb readings to EDF, I monitored the usage every couple of days but they strangely only calculate the bill twice a year.
The core areas of our house have been no less comfortable this year than the previous years but we used 53% and 47% of earlier years consumption.
This was done by rigorously applying rules of switching of radiators in empty rooms, closing doors and not continuously heating corridors etc.
I am annoyed at my previous behaviour as it was both wasteful and a waste of money.
The point is for me, control what you can because at least it might help reduce not unit cost but number of units used

I switched to Octopus last year and it has proven to be a wise/lucky move for me.
I have BEV so cheap overnight electricity is a must-have. Currently paying 7.5 p/kWh for 4 hours and 40 p/kWh peak which is working out at c. 16 p/kWh average. Gas is on tracker tariff which has been 5-6 p/kWh recently.
Making decent savings compared to EDF from where I switched.
OP. Your account doesn't accept email/PM - I have referral code if you decide to give them a try - money off for you and me. Link on my profile.

I agree with DaveA8 about it being an eye opener on waste and use of energy in an oblivious way.
I'm on my own and have been very strict with usage now.
My Oct to Dec bill was the same as the previous year despite the tripling in cost but last year I was comfortable and warm with running hot water.
Now I boil the kettle for hot water and only have the CH on in the evening when it's been bastid cold. The rental flat has the insulation properties of a tent with holes unfortunately
So it's been galling to spend the same as last year to be cold and uncomfortable.
My biggest worry is the ex marital home. Teens with super computers on 24/7, garden door open 24/7 with the CH on 30c 24/7.
I'd imagine there must be many arguments across the UK with teens that like one hour showers.

Move flat!!! You've learned the hard way not to rent an over sized and under insulated property.
Spring is sprunging! Get out and find a proper flat and stop shooting yourself in the foot every morning and evening.
I remember your sound reasoning for that flat but that reasoning is no longer valid and that particular property has revealed itself to be a turd. Be free. Walk away.
If not for yourself, for the PH community as we just can't cope with another winter of woes from South London.

Sorry Donkey
Yet another fuel bill thread and I just couldn't help myself
Apart from the contract, I am now trying to reduce all my stuff in order to move to somewhere cheaper and a lot smaller.
Just this moment looking at my useful cables and leads crate.
Anyone need a charger for a 1990s Motorola?

I've just binned some Nokia chargers. What you absolutely know for sure is that in 20 years time someone will ask if you have one and we will then bore them for 15 minutes regaling our victim with the exciting tale of the day we put that charger in the bin.

So bloody true.
Also I still have all my previous mobile phones going back to the 90s, including that Motorola
