Looking at a MY14 car with the exposed carbon roof option. Does anyone have a view on their track record regarding delamination. I'm assuming AM wash their hands of it and it's not covered under any corrosion warranty (it's carbon after all). What are the repair options if any, and if the worst came to the worst, could it just be resprayed in to match the rest of the car or even wrapped?

Worst case it’s not the end of the world mate.

Can usually be fixed without too much difficultly. I’ve had a fair bit of carbon repaired over the years.

I only recall ever seeing one person post about such an issue here on the AM group.... That said the CF roof was a costly option to spec new (£5,995) so not that many cars had it - mostly seen on Vanquish 2's I think

contact Astontony he bought a Vanquish second hand which had a roof delamination problem and with the help of the AM dealer (not the one he bought from) had it replaced under warranty

Yep thats correct. My understanding is there is a 10 warranty on Carbon body panels. With a bit of back and forward I managed to secure a new fitted carbon roof for my car at no cost other than the inconvenience . My Vanq 2 was a my 15 model so was 7 years old at the time. I got some expert reports from the Polish Carbon fibre parts manufacturer on this site and his opinion was 1. lack of uv retardant and 2. a reactive clear coat.

It is perfect now and I have added a uv resistant PPF

That's not a price for Aston Martin compared to some of their options.

It is, absolutely 100%it was the price in 2016, and the options prices were largely static for many years back then. I enquired specifically whilst specing my V12VS.

Im sure it is a lot more now, but that was the cf roof price for the range back then.

I am sorry, I meant to say its not a "bad" price. Actually inexpensive as far as AM prices go.

Lol

Ok yeah, i agree it was a very fair price.

It probably the one option i wish id paid for on my car! At the time £995 for the black painted roof felt like the sensible option. But on hindsight i wish Id paid £5k more for a cf roof!

Yes definitely same here. Mine was dealer ordered. I looked into carbon fiber wrap for the roof, but it looks like garbage. They don’t seem to be able to make a vinyl that even looks like carbon fiber.

Hello - I have a 2017 Vanquish with a ‘patch’ on the carbon roof. Hard to explain but hopefully the photos show clearly, it stands out. Is this similar to how yours looked that had an issue? I can get it PPF’d to prevent UV damage, however this won’t remedy any underlying issue.

Any thoughts are much appreciated!

Watching with interest as my M3 CSL carbon roof needs refinishing and while a couple of body shops have said “we’ll have a go”, I really want someone with experience to do it.

Is that patch rough to the touch or silky smooth?
It's difficult to tell from pics but was wondering if the clear coat on top just needs cut and polished.
My vanq has a very small patch too, but its on the leading windscreen edge and isn't that noticeable. Been there for 4 years and so far has changed so just left it well alone.
Thankfully as its garaged its not overly exposed to UV damage.

Silky smooth. I went to invisigroup to enquire about PPF. The opinion they had was that the lacquer level was very thin. Luckily like you the car is garaged, although I can’t comment on its life prior to my ownership!

Does the mark on your roof also look visually similar?

Not quite the same. Unfortunately I'm away from home so can't go take a pic. From memory i think mine lokes like the clear coat has lifted slightly off the carbon weave. Luckily mine is very small

I had slight delamination just above the windscreen on a Vanquish 2, and was told by the dealership that it wasn't covered. Moreover, it couldn't be fixed because any sanding into the clear coat would risk damage to the weave on the carbon fibre. So only alternative was a new roof at ... wait for it ... £14k. My detailer suggested just painting it to match the rest of the car. In the end, got rid and would never go anywhere near an exposed carbon roof ever again.

Thanks - Helpful to know. Am currently speaking with a carbon specialist based near Silverstone however, chap who I believe has worked in F1 for many years in the carbon departments. Ironically currently has a GT8 in and an Evora for some work. Have seen some AM carbon repairs done and Ferrari/McLaren repairs too with him - looks very good.

His take was it can be repaired - a very careful and slow job to remove the existing lacquer/clear coat so as to not pick up the fiber's underneath. Then a case of epoxying and re clear coating.

Will probably try to arrange a visit for a full diagnosis and quotation.
