So got an email today from Virgin saying my Internet is going up £9 a month (currently £33) so almost 30% .
I am in an 18 month contract , and there (unlike many) is nothing to allow mid term increases, virgin admit this and also say going forwards form April there will be a caveat to allow inflection plus 3%.
Their only get out seems to be I have the right to cancel , but I don’t want to cancel, I want them to provide what they contracted to do, I couldn’t for example stop paying and say “it’s ok just stop providing me broadband”.
I wonder is this would leave them open to some kind of class action ambulance chaser action , probably not enough pay out . But how can big company to get away with ripping up contracts and apply new terms ? Makes no sense they can simply get away with it

Still waiting for the email from Virgin Media to say our prices are going up (given it's been well documented across news and social media that there's a price hike coming).

Generally you just phone their retentions department and say you're not happy, they'll cancel the increase and may even give you a bit more money off (that's what happened last time when Virgin Media sent a price rise email to me).

Also if you're out of contract look at better deals elsewhere then quote them so they get closer to the price as possible. (If you're in contract no harm in trying either)

In the words of Tony Soprano, 'whaddya gonna do?' It's a perfect time for all the big players to fill their boots by applying the inflationary increase plus whatever percentage they dream up.

Vote with your wallet though. We had the letter to say our price is increasing by £14 per month up to something like £82. We've been out of contract for quite some time now, which has been fine, but that price is too much. I phoned them to basically say 'on your bike, I want to cancel', and was promptly offered £51 per month for an 18 month contract. That'll do! There was even an automated message player whilst on hold to the cancellation department saying 'press 1 for an instant £6 monthly discount'!

Alas, Virgin have the only decent internet around here.

Not all comms companies are doing this. I got a pleasant text message yesterday from Talkmobile.

OK, not a massive saving, but more than a doubling of data. However in a time where everything only seems to be going one way it was a nice surprise to see them pushing the other way without me asking.

You need to call them and they will cancel the rise, they just hope a few will not bother. My £15/m deal is going up £7, 46%, they are having a laugh.

Theres a huge thread here

I've been having this runaround with Virgin for over 9 years. As my contract expires (mine are often 18 months too), the price shoots up. I phone up asking to cancel and they offer me a much better price. Rinse and repeat. rolleyes The way to get the price down last year was to step back from 100Mb (it was actually only 80 ish anyway) to 50Mb speed. I don't stream or download much and there aren't multiple devices connected aside from my laptop and printer so it's enough, for me.

I don't have a landline (Virgin fibre) so I actually had no choice for years, BUT the other providers like 3 are now providing 5G wireless hubs so there's now competition.

My wife and I have also had the same. I love talkmobile. They still offer free roaming even though they are owned by Vodafone who charge.

I've got a £8.00 per month Uswitch 15Gb SIM Only Plan with O2 which I'm happy wit but is around £9 with increases.

Got a text from O2 wanting 11% + 3.9% RPI from March - ferk off!

I'm going to take out a new Uswitch £8.00 per month Uswitch 15Gb SIM Only Plan with O2 and port the same number over. And I get £12 TopCashback.

OFCOM need a boot up the bottom!

Much like OFGEM they don't protect consumers.

Council tax is capped at 5%! We haven't had inflation like this since the 70s

I got on the live chat to complain about my 26% price hike. It sounded like they were willing to waive the increase as I said I would leave otherwise (although I ended up changing contract and binning TV).

In reality all there hikes are only the 3.9% we signed up to (or whatever the specified annual increase is).

The rest is the current inflation figure which we are all paying for everything else anyway ...

Their annual increases are now RPI + 3.9% but somehow mine is going from £50 to £65 which is 30%

It's worse when it's car insurance, given it's a legal requirement.

I've had my email that states the rise will not take place until my current offer ends, in my case this is 12th June 2023. My "offer" will increase by £19 as from 13th June to £44 and with the increase of £7 it will take it to £51 per month so more than double the amount I'm paying now, no thanks VM.

I'm going to cancel but do I wait until the 13th May (that gives them the required 30 day notice) or do I do it now?

Sadly, no telephone line into my place so the other services that rely on that are no good to me, the only option left open is 4G which I used before Virgin came along with their offer but that isn't ideal either as the speed maxed out at 10mb on a good day with a Three SIM. I think I'll have to try different providers and see if I can get a better speed.

Edited to add:

We use Netflix/Amazon Prime of an evening for about 3-4 hours and some light surfing during the day plus a bit of internet radio via an Alexa Echo Dot so am not sure just how much data we use on a monthly basis, went for the unlimited Three SIM for this reason. If I knew what the data usage is likely to be I could try the SIMs that have a fixed amount of data rather than unlimited and save a few quid that way.

Pretty sure you can’t port a number within the same network.

You would need to port to another network and back to O2 to keep it on O2.

My car insurance went down £40 last month (10%). Mobile up £1 (first increase in 6 years) and broadband not changing (though it went down £8 last year when I switched from FTTC to FTTP as no line rental to Openreach any more).

Virgin were going to be charging me £72 a month for internet and a crappy tv package after the increases. I phoned them up with every intention to cancel and got the same package down to £45.

Still a rip though as they are offering new customers the same for £30.

Telecoms and tv is a right old racket.

It’s generally accepted that you can’t port within a network, however there maybe the odd exception with piggybacking .

I have ported the same number from O2 to Giff Gaff and then to Sky, all the same network.
