passenger seat belt
Discussion
I have recently re-bought a Chimaera i owned about 15 years ago!!
The passenger seat-belt doesn't want to come out of the centre spool, it keeps snagging.
I seem to remember it being a problem before when i owned it and there is paperwork showing new seat-belts fitted at some point.
Are the seat-belts a standard fit or do i need to buy specific units? any recommendations?

I don’t know if this helps but….
When I did my partial body lift to clean up the chasis on refitting the seatbelts they would block and not extend.
This appears to be because they were not vertical but slightly inclined left or right. They became very sensitive and the locking mechanism was very easily triggered and didn’t release easily.
Getting them positioned correctly and vertically solved the issue ..

Yes, exactly the same after a full body lift but still. This is very very sensitive, and when you tight the bolt you need to be sure that this doesn't change the inclinaison. When I did my partial body lift to clean up the chasis on refitting the seatbelts they would block and not extend.

Same issue on mine.
So I took apart the reel, it's an extremely basic mechanism inside based on a coil spring to allow the reel to run freely when you want it, then centrifugal force throwing the metal parts outward to bite the teeth if yanked hard.

The issue I found was that the spring wasn't pulling the centre spindle in with enough force to release the metal bits - they were thoroughly jammed in place, hence the decision to take it out (bolt through to rear wheel arch) and fiddle. If I broke it, then I was thinking of buying a replacement anyway.

The bit you can't see (because I took these photos to reference positions before I dismantled) is a little thing that holds a ball-bearing, which controls the ratchet mechanism on the outside of the white plastic wheel - this is the bit that will be affected by vertical positioning - but this isn't perfect in the car anyway, as the whole unit is bolted to a slightly sloping part of the body. Worth making sure it's sitting vertically in the plane you can adjust. It looks a little like this, and mine is very slightly rusty, so I gave it a good clean (but don't oil/grease it because it needs to move freely).

Clearly I don't know the correct names for all the parts.
Anyway, I pulled the spring to be a bit tighter (only slightly), and it helped to improve it. The belt also locks up when you yank it, but I am seriously considering replacing it, as I'm not sure I fully trust it, and I often drive my kids to their sports fixtures in the TVR.
They aren't massively expensive (I saw them for around £110 a pair), ^^they look like a fairly standard fit, very easy to install, and a life might depend on it.
The other thing to watch out for is the seat sliding all the way back into the reel and either knocking into a funny position (after all there is only one bolt holding it), or simply stopping it from spinning - this was happening to a degree on my passenger seat.

This is the only reference I've found (so far) on some old alternative parts lists. Appears to be a fairly common size, available on a certain internet-auction site.(

Hi All
Thanks for the help and suggestions, i will try a them out and report back.
PabloGee yes it is great to have the car back after 15 years, especially as the previous owner has spent a lot of time and money making it better than when i originally had it!!
You do forget the car though, i forgot how any speed over the national speed limit feels like you are re-entering the earths atmosphere at warp speed 11, only you have a smile on your face when you are doing it!
