I sold a car almost 3 month ago now and am still trying to get the insurance cancelled. It's taken so long becuase they wouldn't cancel it becuase I didn't have the certificate to return (never received it in the first place) and that meant I had to receive and fill in more forms declaring that I have no certificate to return.

They've now written saying they'll cancel it and back date my refund if I can send dated proof of sale. I've lost the letter though I got from the DVLA confirming the exchange of V5. I'm trying to get in touch with them to ask for a copy of the letter, but after 30 odd minutes of trying I can't get though their god awful phone system without ending up at some automated dead end!

Does someone have another number for them (been using 0870 240 0010 and 0870 240 0009). Or know a combination of buttons that will get me through to a person that can help or at least transfer me?

why not dial the main number and dont press any digits once the system answers....if it is configured properly it should default to a human....(may work if configured correctly and they have enough "bums on seats"....sorry but i am responsible for configuring these IVR/ACD type systems...although not this one !!)

I've had the same sort of problem when phoning. Apart from trying the above suggestions....try phoning at a different time of day? It's a while ago now since I phoned them, but early morning or late afternoon was never too bad. 'must say that the DVLA people were really helpful too.

Doesn't work. I tried that when I had to enquire where my V5c had gone. It goes on to a voice recognition system which is even worse!!

IIRC I used the following series of options to get through to a person:

Once connected press * (wait a bit) then 1, 1, 2 (or might have been 3).

Good luck!

Is there no option for people without touch tone phones (ie press nothing) or for disabled/hard of hearing? Normally get straight through with these options.

so was it 2 or 3? I had to phone them about 5 times to get the combo right, as most lead to a deadend with an automated message
