Incorrect SP60 costs you more

Thousands lose due to coding mistakes

Has it generated SP60s?
Has it generated SP60s?
Safe Speed and the Daily Telegraph have revealed serious errors in offence coding applied to an unknown (but thought to be large) number of driving licences.

It appears that some authorities have been erroneously marking driving licences with speeding offence code SP60 instead of the correct and commonplace SP30. Normal speeding offences on non-motorway roads should be coded SP30. SP60 is supposed to be reserved for 'undefined' speed limit offences, but has sometimes been applied in error for offences 'where a 60mph speed limit was exceeded'.

The problem is that insurance companies apply a higher loading to SP60 offences.

Founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign Paul Smith said: "Since we first highlighted this problem a year ago, there has been a steady stream of enquiries from drivers whose licences have been wrongly coded.

"The error is potentially serious, because insurance companies may refuse cover to someone who has SP60 coded on their licence. Such a refusal would need to be declared on every insurance proposal for life with a large but unknown total cost.

"Everyone should check their driving licence and ensure that they have not received an SP60 in error. If you have received an SP60 for a typical speed limit offence then you should contact the Police to get the error corrected. If the incorrect code has been applied and motor insurance has been affected then it should also be possible to claim compensation.

"Unfortunately this is all too typical of the greedy and slipshod way in which traffic laws are enforced in the speed camera era. The camera partnerships have expanded quickly with no adequate monitoring systems in place. They are unaccountable and out of control -- it's a runaway gravy train."

I got an SP60 four years ago for doing 98mph on a dual carriageway (70mph) limit. I guess I may be due some compensation then...

Direct Line, Admiral and my broker don't differentiate between an SP30 and an SP60.

Tried the online quotes, for me DL goes up by 10%, Admiral by about £100 regardless of which SP** code was chosen.

My current insurer routinely ignores SP decorations as "everyone has 3 points, QED the stats don't show a rise in risk"

So what circumstances should an SP60 be given? and when should it have been an SP30?

asking because I got an SP60 for speeding in a 60mph NSL

What exactly constitutes a refusal to insure? Is it just someone who wouldn't quote, or is it an insurer who won't re-insure?

I get mine through a broker. As above Admiral wanted 100 credits for an SP** (Admiral = Elephant = Bell = Diamond...)

So what 'SP' should it show on licence for 101 in a 60 NSL, awarded 6pts + 'contribution' at the Mags court - SP30 or SP60?

Liverpool Victoria don't care about any points on your licence, no matter what the offence code. They don't even care if you have had a single ban due to to speeding only. Perhaps if we all insured with them it would send a message to the others that sticking a 100 quid on your premium for doing 33 in 30 is not acceptable.

LV just charge more for insurance in the first place !

After I had renewed with LV, I found that Privelige would have been £70 cheaper.

I know what LV can do with their insurance next year

Nope. Exceeding the NSL should be SP30 (except motorways and speed limits for vehicle type).

See this spreadsheet that the Home Office sent me:

www.safespeed.org.uk/pr234.xls

SP60 should be very rare and only applies to odd offences like exceeding a parks speed limit.

Having got an SP60 for doing 84mph on the A1 dual-carriageway (bl@@dy Nottinghamshire scammers) it appears I was done wrong too?

As it happens, it would have added about £100 to a (then) £600 premium for my Lexus IS300. However, I went to Esure and got a quote of £370 (cf over £700!).

The SP60 code meant I could not get an online quote (saving 10%). However, I asked the website for quotes with an SP30 and SP50 fixed penalty, and then explained the situation to the Esure rep on the phone. Having checked it and found the SP60 to be about £15 more, he then checked with a manager and agreed to do it at the same quote as the SP50/30. They even gave me the 10% online discount, as I had tried to get the quote online.

Nice people!

PS: 3pt SP60 made no difference to the TVR insurance (TVRCC policy through A Manning) - guy reckoned only 3pts in a Griff 500 was doing well (unlike my darling brother who said it means I must drive the TVR like a wuss!)

I stand corrected. I was told by the A303 scamera team that an SP60 was the norm for an NSL. Maybe they got confused as it was a "60" limit.

S'pose at it doesn't effect my insurance anyway it makes little difference, although if it did I would double check it with them (wasting as much of their time as possible - lol)

If you have been given an SP60 which should be an SP30 have they convicted you of the wrong offence. Therefore should the offence be removed completley ?

My thoughts also, surely if you are given the 'wrong' SP it is not a 'valid' conviction, how would one even know if it made a difference to insurance etc (as opposed to SP30).

I'm not particularly concerned as my SP60 has now 'expired' (3 years+ although will still get penalized next year) but have I been overcharged for Insurance because of it?, how can a Court make such a mistake? incompetence, ignorance - surely ignorance of the law is no excuse, especially from it's upholders
