My question is, how much difference does a 2Mb pipe make over 512k in everyday use?

I use the line for very light business use, PHing, and some p2ping (mainly rare music and mixes, occasional Top gears I've missed) and some radio streaming. Whenever I download stuff, I rarely get more than 35kbs (currently with NThell on their 600k dsl). Would it be faster with a 2mb pipe.

Second question, I am going to start using Skype for business use (a couple of hours talk time per day), will I need unlimited capacity for this? Is 512k enough for clear speech?

Sorry to mither, I'm about to move house and need to sort my pipe out. Help appreciated.

Ta!

512 is ample for every day use i.e. browsing, you only need fat lines if you're downloading.

Which is what you do all the time on the internet

Even the fat lines have limited upload speeds (usually) though. I think it's 64k or 128k.

Either way, voice calls will work just fine even on a 512k link. As will video chat.

well yeah technically everything you do on the internet is either up or downloaded. for the sake of this convo downloading refers to abusing your connection and surfing means opening web pages

most connections are either 128 or 256 upload. Id suggest people dont abuse their upload because ISPs frown on it more than downloading.

You can never be too rich, too thin or have too much bandwidth...

Oops missed these replys due to the house move.

After two weeks of hell using a "ahem", dial up, "cough", I finally got a connection from the local exchange for my 2meg Plusnet pipe. Fook Me! Porn at the speed of light. Seriously though, it is ridiculously fast. One thing it did highlight was how essential broadband has become, most websites make no alowances for dial up, the PH forums being a notable exception.

Currently on 4mb download. As at the end of September it will be 10mb download, 384k upload
