I have various car and home insurances where the insurance companies have my card details stored and I have agreed that renewal should be automatic.
If prior to renewal my card expires and the bank send me a new card (with the same card number but different three digit security number) should I update my card details with those insurance companies as if they use the expired card details it will be declined and I’ll unwittingly be uninsured?
Thanks

Personally I hate automatic renewals of these unless previously agreed no price increase etc.
I would guess that if your card is declined then the insurer will make contact rather than simply non renew but if you are concerned then yes call them before renewal is due with the new numbers applicable at renewal date.

Thanks alscar.
Yes I did negotiate a much lower price before renewal and the insurance company said that they will renew using the card they had on file.
All this was done through their online 'chat' as it took 50 minutes hanging on waiting to speak to a human. I printed off this chat so I have it in writing that the insurance would renew. I then find that the card had expired and I had not advised them of my replacement card details. So the insurance was not renewed nor did they contact me. A day later I managed to speak to someone over the phone who took my new card details and the premium has been taken from my bank account. When checking on askMID.com my car still shows as uninsured! I've been using another car until this is sorted. Needless to say I'll not be renewing with them next year!

I have all the insurances on auto renew, all now with Direct Line, they contact with the renewal details about a month before renewal, invariably there's no rise at all or its so minimal as to not be worth looking elsewhere.

Simple to check your card, if its been renewed since last year or you have another card offering a small cashback amount, then just go your account page and enter the new card details, couldn't be easier.

This happened with my GF's Public Liability Insurance, the card expired and the payment was cancelled. They then emailed her to inform her and make payment.

I had house and car insurance with Aviva, and for some reason the house insurance was only available via monthly payments off my debit card (the car insurance was paid in full at the start of each year).

Part-way through the annual house insurance policy, I forgot that my debit card had changed to a new one and would need amending, therefore the payment didn't go through and I promptly got an email notification.

All was sorted after a quick and easy call to their customer services to add the new card details. The customer service rep said it happens a lot.

With new cards, I have always found that the last four digits change. I have never had a card renewed with all 16 digits the same, that sounds a security risk to me.

It's now 2 days since the premium was debited to my account and askMID.com still show the car as uninsured. I'll be pursuing this with the insurance company and claim for the time I've been unable to use the car due to their incompetence.I'll update once it shows as insured.
Thanks for all the input.

Does askMID update straight away?
What did your insurance certificate show?

Grumps.

I had an e mail for my breakdown cover renewal non payment after I lost the card and had a replacement which I forgot to tell them about.

They politely asked me to contact them re payment but didn't cancel cover or even threaten to cancel it if I didn't pay up immediately. All sorted with one quick phone call.

Why can't you use the car, if you're insured? MID database is just that, a database. It's not the final word on being insured or not.

Is that not what ANPR cameras access?

From memory they have up to 14 days, most are updated within 7 days.

It is insured, make sure you have insurance cert, if they still don't believe you they can phone MIB or your insurer.

The other issue at play here is even the police cars are not updated in real-time from memory. Hence why they have a phone line.

ANPR cameras do not send out fines for driving with no insurance. Police cars carry on board ANPR cameras and use those to pick up uninsured drivers. But if they pull you, you are insured, so no problem.

I have no evidence I'm insured only the debit on my bank account for the premium which Mr Plod would ignore as it could be for any insurance and I don't yet have the certificate. They would simply rely on their MID record of the car being uninsured. Nor would plod phone the insurance company and wait nearly an hour to speak to a human. As a disabled pensioner I can't risk having the car impounded and told to make my own way home.

You are obviously very stressed by this and paradoxically as a disabled pensioner I doubt the Police would impound the car anyway.
You know the car is Insured so maybe send them an email ( to their complaints dept if necessary - maybe cc them actually ) asking for a urgent copy of said certificate.

Insurers issue the police with a special number for them to call with insurance queries. They get slightly better service than you or I.

UPDATE
On 8th March the insurers sent a text saying following a system failure it was not possible for your Motor renewal to be activated, the premium had been refunded and I needed to contact them to make a further payment! Needless to say I didn’t renew with them and insured elsewhere.
My concern is that technically the insurer cancelled my insurance –albeit their own fault – so would I need to disclose this with future insurers? Or did the insurance never exist in the first place?

Thanks

They didn't cancel, you just chose not to renew.
