UK Tech Geek, Needing Help from UK Car Geeks

[Matt196695]

I'm looking for an identification number or service which tells me which make and model a vehicle is.

VIN will not work, because it's specific to one specific car.

E.G
54543FF = Volkswagen Golf, 2.0TDI. 3door, black.

There is something on the market that does this called CAP-HPI, using their CAP_ID or CAP_Code (https://business.cap.co.uk/products-and-services/cap-code)

However, their customer support and pricing are horrific. Surely there's some form of a unique identifier for each vehicle type?

Is there an alternative?!
