Big birthday for my partner coming up and after a recent visit to a shop of sparkling things she now has an eye on a Cartier Tank Francaise. Which in Medium size is RRP £4200. And of course for 2023 they have revised the design and it's the new version that is preferred (so the opportunity for discounted out-going model is removed)

That's a big chunk for a quartz (although I get that the Cartier Tank Francaise really is just a fancy bracelet that has a watch in it)

I've previously bought Omega with an easy 15-20% discount and Rolex with 0% discount.

Would anyone have some up-to-date knowledge on Cartier and possible discounts?

Thank you muchly,

Dom Hackett might be able to help. I've had a couple of new watches off of him over the years, both with a nice discount smile

Are you prepared to jump on an aeroplane to save some ££? Tax free from a UK airport would be 4200/1.2 = £3500. Not all UK airports will stock Cartier so another option is to take a cheap flight to somewhere like Geneva where the retail price is 4250chf (£3800) but where you can easily get the VAT (7.7%) removed which would bring the price down to around £3530.

Plus the 22% to bring it back into the UK.

Another vote for Dom.

He sourced a Cartier for Mrs Knee several years ago with a decent discount.

Eesh, didn’t realise that! Don’t get back to the UK very often at the moment.

Back in 2007 I purchased a 38mm Pasha Chronograph for myself and a Tank for my Wife.

IIRC, the Pasha retailed at £48xx and the Tank at £13xx

I managed to get the Pasha down to £38xx and the Tank down to £8xx

I was in the same jewellers last year buying a Mondaine for the Wife. I enquired about the equivalent Pasha to mine, (which is now in a 42mm case), which was an eye watering £12900 !

I asked what sort of leyway they have with the prices, only to be told “the price is the price, no discount”.

Whether that’s the policy of that chain of jewellers, or that’s from Cartier, I’ve no idea.

I suspect that you might have to do quite a bit of ringing around to get much discount on one these days.

What about a used item?

Post the box and papers back home and wear the watch on the flight over.

Another vote for Dom. He sourced a Cartier for my other half a few years back with a decent discount.

I bought a Cartier Tank XL Automatic just over a year ago when they came out. Went to my usual Local AD which I've had a previous relationship with. Got roughly 15% off by simply asking.

Why is that?
Ask the Government!

UK no longer has duty free, not at airports nor for tourists shopiing in and around the UK.

I think the pashas are discontinued now so fewer new ones may attract a premium? I bought one a few years back as a treat as it’s the only watch I’ve ever really wanted.

Not bought one for years, but it was always 20%.

Cartier is a jeweller first and foremost, so why not. They make arguably the most desirable women's watches.
