After a lifetime of saying that I can’t bear country music, I find myself fighting disturbing urges….

So far I have discovered that I can listen to this:

and this…

and this…

If I were - you know…. - interested to keep exploring the dark-side, which other artists do I need to listen to and why? I like live performances, much less keen on studio airbrushed perfection…

I love the classic C&W stuff.

One of my favourites - El Paso by Marty Robbins. https://youtu.be/5Q9bAWGEkcE

There's loads of classic C&W; Harper Valley PTA by Jeannie Riley, Jolene by Dolly, Blanket on The Ground by Billie Jo Spears, Big Bad John by Jimmy Dean, He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry by Hank Williams, Ode to Billy Joe by Bobby Gentry, Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk The Line and A Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash, The Most Beautiful Girl by Charlie Rich, Stand By Your Man by Tammy Wynette, I Fall To Pieces by Patsy Cline, The Gambler by Kenny Rogers, Tom Dooley by the Kingston Trio.....

I like ancient country, more bluegrass perhaps.

Most modern country feels 100% soulless to me and designed to be used over pickup truck and military recruitment adverts.

I always had a liking for Glen Campbell.

Country has some amazing story telling in the songs.

It comes to us all in the end. Gretchen Wilson is my current guilty pleasure.

Jerry Douglas got me into bluegrass - his playing on Sarah Jarosz's albums and Dolly Parton's Grass is Blue is top notch.

Luke Coombs and Eric Church are two of my favourites along with Chris Stapleton as mentioned before.
Morgan Wallen has some good songs (now he’s been un-cancelled…)
Brothers Osborne for that rock country sound
I implore everyone to listen to anything by Zach Bryan. Some of the best music I’ve listened to this year.

I love a bit of country, old stuff, new stuff, whatever! I really like a lot of Sturgill Simpson's music (apart from the Sound and Fury album)
I recently stumbled across Post Malone covering one of Simpsons tracks, which is about as far removed from his usual offerings as could be, and it's great
Check it

Careful it's a slippery slope into 'folk' next.

Aoife O'Donovan is worth a listen, try the album 'Fossils' and you'll know before the first song if it works for you or not.

I'm a bit partial to 'some' folk too, I've just listened to that and it's good.
I can only listen to it in small doses though, as lovely as it is I eventually need something with a bit of get up and go

She's got a beautiful voice, Crooked Still stuff is also worth a listen.

I'm a big fan of country/bluegrass/folk style and totally unashamed smile Would agree though that a lot of the modern country stuff can be a bit bland. Chris Stapleton's earlier band The Steeldrivers, John Prine, Todd Snider, The Devil Makes Three, Hayes Carll, Dan Reeder...

And Red Sovine of course.
