Hi All,

Anyone take a guess at what this is, and why’s it in the sump of my Rover V8?

It’s a hard plastic washer/spacer (broken into two pieces).
2mm thick and about 20mm O.D.

Found in the bottom of the sump as I’ve pulled the engine out to change the cam.
Pretty sure it’s not supposed to be there! - but where has it broken off from?

Any ideas/mockery gladly accepted.

To add a little bit of interest to a pretty dull post - this is what the engine is out of:

Thanks

Not sure if I have the correct engine, look up ERC1629 "something washer" "something oil pickup"

Could be between the baffle plate. Actually thought it was a magnet in the photo, it's not a magnet is it?
The centre hole looks bigger on yours! Might give you some ideas, try to find the engine part schematics.

Thanks for the reply Skyrocket.

It’s not that steady bracket washer - that’s much bigger and it’s still in place.

It was a long shot, just thought somebody who'd stripped/rebuilt a RV8 recently might recognise it.

It’s on the engine stand now, so hopefully when I pull it apart it’ll be obvious where it’s from.

Could be a valve stem seal.

ETA that's a lovely looking Celica btw.

No 9 in this link.
https://new.lrcat.com/#!/1230/73417/74385/5972/746...

This type are only fitted to the inlet valves & rely on the fuel for lubrication. None on the exhausts as they relied on the oil.

Whilst you can change the seals without removing the heads, as you've got it out on a stand I wonder if it would be worth your while taking them off anyway to check the valve faces & seats & any play in the stem to guide fit.

Also be an idea to take the rocker shaft assembly off - look for any shims under the posts - strip & clean the oil passageways in the arms & the shaft itself.
Use a piece of dowel to put the bits on as you remove them - keeps them in order so they go back in the same place.
I was surprised just how much crap had built up inside mine - to the extent that some of the passages in the arms were blocked.

Couple of links here which might be of interest.

Thanks for the reply and info paintman.

What I’ve read on these ‘tap washer’ valve stem seals is they are far from the best.
They all perish and fall out at some point and how useful they are seems up for debate.

Very early RV8’s had no valve stem seals, so I’ll have to make a call to replace them or leave them out.

I have some spare heads, so I might also get these machined to take the post 94 stem seals.
