Keep 435D GC or Buy X3 M40i
Discussion
Hi guys,
Posting for a friend who has a 435D GC, but I am actually quite interested in this too, the X3 M40i could be a worthy successor to my F31 335D, what do you guys think? In anycase here is what he said:
Hi Lads,
I was wondering if you guys could give advice on a dilemma I am having in my mind at the moment. With our car getting the diff leak repair, the wife has been moaning about another car.
She has always wanted an SUV...and so my man-maths has kicked in....
I could part exchange the 435D for about 17k and get a 2019 (68 plate) X3 M40i 23k miles on the clock from BMW CPO for 37k ( BMW X3 Series X3 M40i 3.0 5dr )...meaning I have to finance 20k. They quoted me £631 X 36 at the interest rate they offered and I was approved. I was so tempted to click the submit button! Thankfully the 435D is still getting sorted so I couldn't do some impulsive buying.
I wouldn't go the PCP route it would be HP, however I am doubting whether or not this is a good idea. We drive maybe at the very very most 6k a year. The 435D is still in great condition sans the rogue oil leak, and only @50k miles.
Do you guys think it is worth it? I get the whole YOLO once thing, but I am thinking, we owe nothing on the 435D, if I buy the X3 for £37k now, in 3 years it will be worth £20-24k at the most I imagine meaning I lose 13-17k in depreciation alone, without interest on the HP. 435D will depreciate more but it has had its steep depreciation already, 3 years from now it will have lost maybe another 5k, and quite frankly there is nothing wrong with it other than the diff oil leak, interior is still as new and exterior is in great condition, my ass is just itching for something else.
I tell myself we only do 5-6k a year so the 435D's DPF wont be a concern if we get the X3...but nothing could go wrong in the 435D that would cost me anywhere near what it costs in depreciation, and I have a BMW warranty which I pay £70 a month for in any case. Not only that, I am so pedantic about checking the DPF's health and taking it for a run I doubt that would be an issue.
The 435D is also much the same performance as the X3 M40i...arguably more usable with the massive grunt down low, but I doubt I will feel much difference in the real world.
Add into the mix we are saving for our first house...In 3 years from now the 435D will maybe have 65-68k on the clock, so far from old, and we will have 20k more to add to our deposit on a house...BUUUUT the X3 is a new generation, B58 is a peach of an engine, and the X3's interior is so much nicer than the F36...but is it 20K more?! My head is getting sore haha.
So is it worth it???? Opinions would be greatly appreciated!!

Went through a similar first world 'dilemma' myself at the end of last year. Had a '66 plate F31 330d which I'd had from new, knew the car inside out, was in fantastic condition and was only on 23k miles. I'd been hankering after a G21 M340i, or maybe an X3 M40i for a year or two but there was no need for me to change and cost to change was at least £20k for the vehicles I was considering.
In the end I was able to minimise the changeover cost by selling the F31 privately (was quite easy to sell due to mileage, cond. and extended warranty) and pushed for a cash deal on a 16 month old G21 that had been for sale at a BMW dealer since the summer, and was about 18k to change.
My position is quite different than the OP circumstance though, with no mortgage to worry about. Otherwise I would not even have contemplated the change.
Obviously depends on income / outgoings and how comfortable one is with debt, but imo as he's saving for a house, keep the *35d. Absolute no brainer. Living with a 6 cyl BMW diesel is no hardship!
That B58 engine though.......... (I'm kidding, keep the *35d)

Cheers for the responses, I will tell my friend to come and have a look, I told him to keep the 435D, it just doesnt make financial sense IMO. Especially for such low mileage, it will be a depreciating hunk of beautiful metal on the drive. Throw in the mix that they are getting ready to buy a house, a 25k commitment over 3 years is such a waste. In the end I was able to minimise the changeover cost by selling the F31 privately (was quite easy to sell due to mileage, cond. and extended warranty) and pushed for a cash deal on a 16 month old G21 that had been for sale at a BMW dealer since the summer, and was about 18k to change.

Dave - I noticed you drove a F31 330D, only 23k miles on a 66 plate tells me it did less than 4k a year, was this mostly town driving or did you do that mileage on exclusively long journeys? Reason for asking is if you had any DPF/Emissions gear issues in that time?
My wife and I own our house, still paying mortgage though, but were we to move to a X3 M40i (even a M340i would be in the running) we could afford it, but with the mileage we do now working from home I just can't see it being worth it. I never finance my vehicles I always buy cash, and I just cannot sensibly part with 20k for something I would use 20min a day where my F31 335D does everything the M340i does, and since dropping the miles, keeping on top of the DPF I have had no issues so far. If I want more power to be on par with M340i I can just get a stage 1 remap with intercooler etc, even then would something go wrong it could never cost the 20k I would have to pay in.
But then my "manmaths" brain tells me, you could afford it technically and go on spoil yourself you are getting older. I am sure many of you have had this same dilemma before, I just think one tends to hype up and romanticize getting a new car, it feels all new, better, faster but then after 2 months the novelty has worn off and it is just another excellent car, just 5-10% better than the one you had

Yes my mileage was very low as I work from home and of course we had the covid lockdowns during that time, meaning the car did sit for a few weeks at a time without being used. We do also have a Mini and tend to use it around town quite a bit. My F31 did go on regular long work trips however, typically 200+ mile round trips 10 to 15 times a year, so the car was used as intended in that regard. It was also only run on V Power diesel from new - basically to try and keep the engine as 'clean' as possible to avoid DPF problems with not doing mega miles. Absolutely no issues with the car whatsoever, still ran like new when I sold it. Only work it ever had in addition to scheduled servicing etc, was the EGR recalls but the car had no problems prior to it being done.
As I said, if I was younger and at a different stage in life I would never have changed cars, but I'm now 50 with little outgoings so thought why not?!
If considering a G21 M340i, I can say they are absolutely brilliant, easily the best car I've ever owned and worthy of the praise in the reviews. Not specific to the M340i, the G21 is far more refined than the F series cars, NVH is streets ahead. Mine is pre LCI so has the ID7. I've been in a few cars with new ID8 and just can't get used to it.
Only thing I miss about my F31 is that being RWD the uncorrupted steering felt better (lighter with more feedback) than the M340i, which of course is XD. Had it been available as RWD in this country, I definitely would have sought one out. That said the XD in the M340 is very rear biased so doesn't feel 4WD in the way an equivalent Quattro or VW product does.
I'll be keeping this car long term again, and my main reason for going M340 over X3 M40 was that I wanted as new a car as possible within my budget, and the X3s were quite a few thousand more for same age/mileage and being a car as opposed to an SUV, found the M340 more enjoyable to drive quickly.
The MHT (mild hybrid tech) also became available earlier in the G21 (for 2021 MY iirc) but X3's didn't get it until later. Its a clever system, filling in any dips in torque and makes the start/stop (which can't be de activated) incredibly smooth and unobtrusive. A few more mpg doesn't hurt either. Unless you particularly need the additional ride height, consider the X3 would also be more on fuel (even with MHT). Not that you buy these cars for economy but every little helps.
I also even considered an X3M Comp but came to my senses, or rather my wife made me come to my senses! It was a lovely drive and not as harsh suspension as folk suggest but I found the S58 engine had to be worked to get the car lifted, and lacked the low down torque of the B58. When it came alive though - bloody hell, can only imagine what the G81 is like. If money were no object, I'd have one on order..
Back to M340s, there weren't that many available when I was looking back in late Nov but now there are even less, and those with low miles and decent spec (a few are missing HK which is a must have imo) are commanding a premium. Par for the course in this market I guess. The hunt is all part of the fun, but I'd be prepared to travel if you decide to change.
