Wife bought a stop gap one of these, a 2016 2.0 stinky diesel Cooper, needs to take 4 people plus a collie, so need a small estate really, conventional hatch doesn't really cut it.
As far as the chintzy mini goes, the boot on these (I think) is tight (you have to take the false floor out really to have enough space for the mutt). The diesel is gumming up with short journeys, £15-20k available, choices look like:
- A newer/ better spec one of the same. 20k is arse end of the JCW ones which have (I think 231bhp) but seem OK as buyers have generally gone nuts on extras. It's at least 25k for the 306hp version and it will be left on the mean streets of Glasgow, so less is defo a good idea.
- CLA. Also a s
t boot, but tolerable apparently, it's the poorly named petrol 2.0 "250" model with 204bhp "by AMG" in range. Dash is awful with the stick on ipad, but welcome to modernity.
Ideally will have leather which counts a few other cars out, petrol, maybe hybrid if need be, nowhere to charge an electric. What other abnormally large hatches with a compact overall footprint, or small estates should be on the list?

Yeti is a big leggy these days tbh, hard to find in lowish mile petrol form too. But a good shout, they are appropriately boxy 
A4 et al prev considered, I mean the 3, C class etc are bob on for this, but the wife is adamant she wants something smaller. The joy of paradox.
Berlingo with leather? Haven’t seen one but haven’t looked, we’re approaching that blue badge time of life so it might be a good anticipatory purchase
