Been to the gym today (yes big shocker I know but it's free for a week :hehe:) and my heart rate was 180! :yikes:
I don't know too much about HR and stuff but that does seem very high! My mates never got anywhere near that!
Always had a relatively high resting HR of near 100bpm but been told that could be due to my really low BP or else I'd fall over!

Is it just a matter of getting fitter to get it down in which case I keep pushing it or shouldn't I push it any higher that that as I've had it well over 200bpm when I've been to gym's previously?

That's a little high, but I don't think it's anything to worry about. If your resting HR is high then in exercise it will be proportionately higher. My resting HR is 75 my cardio exercise HR is 150+. Yes if you get a bit fitter, it'll bring your resting HR down, and make your heart muscle bigger and fitter. Bjorn Borg had an HR of 40 or 50something.....

And I seem to remember that Tiff Needell managed to hit somewhere around 240 (i think) after .8 of a second of full throttle in a top fuel dragster

Your 'maximum' heart rate is meant to be 220 minus your age; you'll see this on some gym cardio equipment (like the Life Fitness range). This is how you then calculate what heart rate you want to the aiming for if you want to fat burn (around 60% of MHR) or improve cardio fitness (around 85% MHR)...although I'm not a big believer in targeting fat burning by going slower as this only works if you go on long enough to use up your gylcogen stores which takes around 90 minutes!

Already had my 1st injury of cutting my hand open on the water fountain!!!

That is your theoretical maximum remember, not a zone that you should stay in for an extended period!

I used to do a lot of swimming. Used to be quite fit really what with all the horse riding aswell. Plus I used to run but that made my clicky hips bad.
Guess with all the shift work and academic work all mixed in I just lack the time and energy!

Swimming is good if you have joint problems, low impact and all that.

I remember at medschool, we did this experiment, where i had to wear a kind of firemans suit, which covered me from head to toe and kept all the sweat in, then I had to cycle on an exercise bike, until I was hyperventilating. My HR was 220 at that point....... When I got off the bike, they then had to weigh me, (out of the suit) to show how much water I had lost, during the exercise..... Sadistic?

Average is 72bpm. If you're a couch potato that's impressive
