Sons of The Forest
Discussion
Yep, I kinda got hooked and blitzed everything that's so far available. I'm now at the stage of messing about and building large structures which basically means I've turned into a lumberjack for the most part. I need to go back to the original though as they'd not finished the story side when I gave up with it so there's things for me to (re)discover.
I love the quietness of Sons, more-so given the loudness of the enemy screams or just random foliage rustling that makes you suddenly stop and scan the area.
Just checked and I'm 42 hours in so far...

Head to all of the marked places on your PDA, round markers to start with, then the caves. You'll be able to make your way through some from the off, others you'll be needing something to get further but a lot of what you need is in/around the marked points. That'll get you far enough and confident enough to just start randomly wandering around the island and finding a few more things.
Other places of interest to look out for are the main beaches around the island, there's usually something to do/see/get at most of them.

It's normal (at present) re-spawning between sessions, so if you save, quit, load again, all items will be back. Some consider it a bit of an exploit but it'd make for a much harder survival experience if things didn't respawn in some way. It'd be nice if it could be turned off or set to a fixed number of days like most other survival games. I don't think I've seen things return on a single play session though if that's what you're seeing.
Regarding base building, you don't really need to build one. You can have multiple tarp tent/beds setup around the island for saving/sleep purposes which allows you to just get by for a long while. You can, and do/will, carry a massive amount of gear around with you which sort of does away with needing to set roots down anywhere, but there comes a point where you just want to play a bit with building things.
One thing I've found, and seems to be backed up online, there are some completely safe places to build where the island residents won't attack your base. My main base I'm currently setting up is on one of the main beaches, the western one close-ish to to the northern one. I'm building in the very shallow water where it opens up from the river into the sea. The residents won't venture onto the wet sand area so you get to build in peace, you just need to get the logs and such there. It does mean Kelvin won't deliver logs direct to your base though so you have to have him just dump them nearby.
The other place I'm setting up is on the lake on the eastern side of the mountains. If you lay out a grid of logs on the frozen ice, come summer time they magically plant uprights below and can then sit in the water. Residents won't venture out to it in the non-winter months so again, fairly safe and sedate to build, you just have to zipline logs to it.
