BYD showrooms now in UK

Not really heard of the brand at at that price for what looks like a very bland SUV type vehicle I cant see it having much impact in the UK where people are very conscious about what badge is on their car.
You say that but isn’t that how Kia and Hyundai got a foot hold in the market? Offering pretty run of the mill, good value, reliable cars that all had a 7 year warranty. MG seem to have done ok, and Dacia sells a lot of cars. Price will come into it, but people are happy to buy so called rubbish brands.

But those brands EV’s are too expensive for a lot of people. I think BYD will be doing very well with their offering, look at how MG are doing. They will become the new ev version of qashqai’s, ford eco sports, dacia dusters. cootuk said:
Looks like Arnold Clark have one of the first BYD showrooms in Scotland with the Atto 3 starting around £36500.
Not exciting, but a mainstream EV competitor for people who want boring.
I wonder how these stack up to other Chinese brands like MG.

Good luck to them. Wonder if the cringy badge can be deleted as a no cost option.

(not very) cheap Chinese s

It's this type of product that the route to electrification is going to make cars as interesting as your fridge. Do you know what make and model fridge you have? Do you care?
I can see that these may well be a challenge to sell, after all how would you actually sell one - the BYD franchise would have to sit alongside a known franchise and any buyer of these is likely to have been swept up by an eager salesman pouncing on a customer who walked through the wrong door. I'd image that there would be some significant discounts to get any one in one of these, but then again maybe the weekly payments would be cheap.

But is that not be the point. A large percentage of people just want white good transport, and this might be an easy entry route into EV’s. I suspect they don’t care what badge it has on the front.

te.I suspect these are just as well built as your so called premium lines.
Given Audi and Mercedes have gone from low volume niche executive sellers in this country to mainstream and VA have utterly dominated Ford and Vahuxhall I'd suggest people very much care about the brand in this country. Very hard to dominate the cul de sac in a generic Chinese wagon that sounds like the slogan for a pyramid scheme marketing course run out of a Midlands holiday in conference room.
Dacia, Hyundai Kia got their foothold by selling very cheap cars- 36k is not cheap by any measure. MG is at least a recognisable brand in the UK.
And I do know who made my fridge, it's a Bosch.

A significant number of the electric buses on the road have BYD chassis. They are a huge company and I'm sure the motor tech will be decent.
Obviously they'll need to work on an image and establish some kind of foothold. Makes the Ora Funky Cat look even more ridiculous and overpriced.

Completely agree but my point was more around the price of the cars they are selling, 36k is not a cheap car like Dacia or even MG up to a point. Price will come into it, but people are happy to buy so called rubbish brands.
I think the BYD offering is going to be too expensive for most to consider it, maybe if it had a RRP starting with a 2 it would become more interesting to those looking for a cheap (relatively speaking) way into the EV market.

Maybe to come into the market under cutting your rivals would help drive sales
BYD are an established manufacturer in China and have been selling PCV's in the UK for several years. Have a look at a double deck electric bus in London and the majority are BYD (I used to buy them).
We did try some of their smaller stuff but it wasn't great compared to a Kia Niro etc.

So an additional £8k for the BYD seems like quite a step up.
caveat i've not driven either yet!
