Alpine launches A110 San Remo 73

Limited-run A110 marks 50th anniversary of the marque's victory at the famous rally

We all knew that Alpine was never going to be able to enter the A110 in the WRC’s top category – that’s reserved for hatchbacks and loosely-defined SUVs – but we at least hoped it’d release some retro-inspired limited editions that hark back to its rallying days. It did just that with last year’s Tour de Corse 75, which it has followed up with the new San Remo 73.

If the name wasn’t enough of a giveaway, the San Remo 73 commemorates the 50th anniversary of the French marque’s victory at the 1973 Sanremo rally. As such, it’s finished in the same striking shade of Original Caddy Blue as the rally winner, contrasted with black roof arches. The centre section of the roof is made of carbon fibre that’s been dyed red, a subtle nod to the bright red roof on the period rally car. Topping it all off is a white and black sticker set for the bonnet, doors and rear bumper that call back to the achingly cool Alpine liveries worn in the 1970s.

The rally touches are a tad more subtle on the inside. The single-piece Sabelt bucket seats are embroidered with ‘World Champion 73’ and come with six-point harnesses for the full rally effect. You also get ‘sports pedals’, an aluminium kick plate for the passenger and a continuation of the white and black striping on the door inserts. Standard equipment gets a healthy bump, too, notably Alpine’s high performance brake kit with 320mm discs and an active sports exhaust. So while it’s no more powerful than a standard A110, it should certainly feel a touch racier.

It needs to be with a price tag of €89,000. UK pricing hasn’t been revealed yet, but you won’t have to wait long to find out with orders opening at 8am on 17th March. Alpine’s limiting production to just 200 examples worldwide, so you’d better have your finger on the buzzer tomorrow morning.

Love the new Alpine but somehow that original makes it look seriously bland. What a car.

I look at this and just want the original, not the new one...

Always drooled over the original Alpine 110. I recall seeing them occasionally on the roads in France and Spain many, many years ago. There's one in my dream garage!

Have they intentionally shown the shots of the old car so you can't see that the wheels aren't white like the new one?

The interior is nice, though to be fair all the A110's are great inside. The exterior though is just a load of stick on decals & silly white wheels. Struggling to see where the premium in price is over a standard car.confused

Another day, another respray with a daft markup branded as a "special edition". But hey, it might produce a better investment yield than the base car, right?

i did think this, but on reflection, good for them!

They brought a new car to the market and in the days of shared platforms, I appreciate they need to milk it somewhere. Much better to do interesting limited editions with high margins to subsidise by what is by all accounts a great 'basic' car from a petrolhead perspective.

I like it but it feels like the A110 is sort of like the domestic market GR86 where Toyota did a plastic steel wheel version knowing customers would tune it to their own tastes. This is like the opposite adding a few bits an charging 90k makes you think the vase model might make an excellent platform for the aftermarket

Not keen on the paint and sticker job at all.

Makes the GT spec car look reasonably priced

Absolutely love the paint and sticker job. The price, not so much.

I would rather be sailing

Every time I see a picture of an original A110 I drool. Out of my price range though. Not sure about the stickers on the new one. If I had the money I would get the old one and stick with my Legende as an every day driver

Having looked at that side profile and photos of the engine bay, an lining things up in my head, the block seems to sit pretty much right on top of the rear axle.
