Proposals - How did you do yours?
Discussion
Morning PH massive - in the new few weeks I am planning to propose to my OH. I've been and selected rings (brought a bridal set). I'm planning to ask her while we're on holiday in a couple of weeks, the only issue is that I've no idea exactly when or how (as in, what I'm actually going to say), so wanted to see how people here went about their own proposals?
I designed the engagement ring - chose a specific diamond from Kimberley, SA - had it created by a jeweller in South Africa and took my then fiancee to Kruger Park and Durban where I grew up for a holiday. I had prepared a breakfast picnic and proposed over a glass of wine, on the savanna, sitting in a 4x4, watching the wildlife as the Sun was coming up.
We married in a lovely venue near Reading, then Honeymooned in Kenya and Zanzibar - more safari and beach.

Will you marry me usually works.
I’m guessing you have discussed rings rather than guessed what she might like? I’d have got that very wrong.
We actually chosen the rings together, as although she'd hinted on quite a few occasions about the sort of style she liked, I wanted to be 100% sure she liked it/them. It was a good job we did as she found that when she actually tried them on, she didn't like the style she'd originally chosen. Used the enigma code emulator at bletchley park to encode her a message. When the first 5 letters came out she almost stopped because she thought I was being rude (they come out in groups of 5).
It seemed like the best way after a long weekend of national trust houses, a vineyard in Sussex and a picturesque inn to stay at.

I proposed with a single diamond so she could design her own ring which had another 2 diamonds in it!
On one knee overlooking Woolacombe bay. Just after breakfast went for a walk and honestly it was playing so much on my mind I just wanted it done. I knew she would say yes, but still doing it early meant we could tell people throughout the day (a few overseas where the evening would have meant leaving to the next day). By midday all was told and we got on with enjoying the day and celebrating in the evening.
I was going to do it on her birthday (Two birds, one stone...
) but about 10 months before was a bottle of Rioja down in a local restaurant and she was talking about friends' weddings over the coming year and how much she wanted to get married so I decided to get it done. No ring, no prep...
I had asked/tried to ask a few times before (Once as a cure for her hiccups.) so she called her family straight after so I couldn't back out.

Well then you've done it, surely? Ari said:

For the record
1st: while we were in bed having fun
2nd: at a GnR tribute gig
The 2nd has lasted. Always involve rock music would be my advice

I'm not sure I ever did. And to be honest I'm still not quite sure how it happened.
I do recall us going to Florence at very short notice, like 3 days, she thought I was taking her somewhere romantic to propose, I'd told her I was going for a job interview. As it turned out the guy who was going to interview me got delayed so we missed. She thought the interview was a cover story & got all upset when I hadn't proposed!
I bought her the best ring I could afford at the time, all of about £250. We had spent all our money on going to Mexico and we were young and hard up at the time. I think it's important to marry someone who would accept you regardless of the ring, if the ring matters enough to say no, then don't propose.
I proposed on a beach on holiday, around our 5 year 'anniversary', after having had a meal together. It was predictable but quite romantic at the time.

We were both young, we had an Mk1 XR2 and found out we could get 15% off if we were married. So we kind of drifted into it to get the price down.
I kind of overlooked the wedding costs in my calculations, which were about £300. I could have done it for £250 but it's a special day, so I thought to hell with it, let's go crazy.

We looked like husband and wife on the day, but these days more father and daughter. I think it's fair to say I got the best end of the deal.
