What's the view on the Government introducing a National emergency alerting protocol?

https://www.gov.uk/alerts

The reasons for the protocol are published on their web site

- severe flooding
- fires
- extreme weather.

Assuming that the warnings could be focused on specific phone cell areas so not everyone in the country got a warning for an event that may be localised.

Out of interest can anyone think of a UK event in the last 100 hundred years that would have merited a real-time instant alert such as this? Maybe The Blitz?

Surely we have enough middle aged men in knackered old Land Rovers in 4x4 response groups across the country, all sleeping with one eye on the phone for this not to be an issue?

If it’s for serious, clearly defined emergency messages I’m fine with it. If it’s yellow weather alerts then overkill.
Some folk seem to be getting overexcited about nanny state meddling, posting videos about how to disable them, moaning another intrusion when they probably get about 200 messages a day anyway, but they might not be saying that if one refers to some Skuds from Putin.

No. Thames high river levels. 1978. My wife had just given birth and was in hospital, I moved all the baby stuff upstairs. OK, not U.K. wide, and no text alerts available but quite widespread. See
