Hello All

If I import a 9 year old car that has 164g/Km of CO2 do I pay £585 for the first year after registration? Or do I pay the much lower "rates for second tax payment onwards" - around £165.

The DVLA have provided a very "helpful" blog on the matter which is still as clear as mud to me.
https://insidedvla.blog.gov.uk/2017/03/31/new-vehi...

On first reading I thought I'd need to suck it up and pay £585 on top of import taxes/duty.
But then I realised that for the importation of new cars, this blog very clearly states you need to pay the first years payment but it does no such thing in the paragraph about importing used cars.

Anyone know for sure ?

In the early 2000's they would class a 2nd hand Jap car as new based on it being a new reg when imported. Afaik that has now changed and they use the date of first reg anywhere in the world.

A 9 year old car is 2014 so there is no additional 'luxury' fee. It only applies to cars after 1/4/17 and in any case only applies for 6 years.

Unless they transfer all the emission data (unlikely), it'll be VED rated as an LGV, £290 at the moment but going up by 10% ish on 1/4/23.

Right I'm very embarrassed so will come clean as it were. I suggested 9 years to emphasise the apparent "injustice". In reality its a 2020 car so much more recent than 2017. Apologies for that and thanks a lot anyway.

So to be clear I'll need to pay £585 plus the first registration fee of £55 ?

So you asked a question you didn't want the answer to just to raise a point of injustice on VED?

How did that work out for you?

I'll bet the government are seriously reconsidering now!

That's not quite right. I thought I was asking the same question as I'd forgotten about the 2017 difference mentioned in the DVLA blog post above.

Still, I was stupid for exaggerating my question (I was really peed off DVLA's own blog on the matter didn't make it clear) and if no-one replies I deserve what I get.

I do need to send my V355/5 back and I don't know how much tax to include. I would of course be very grateful indeed if someone knows the answer and lets me and whoever else reads this know.

Whether or not I get a helpful reply I've truly learned my lesson and won't do it again !

Right, just in case anyone manages to read this thread to the end I have the answer.

First, since the car came from out of the EU and commonwealth (it came from Ukraine) I was told it needed to be taxed in the private light goods category. £295 per year. So no initial "first year" inflated fee to pay but just an inflated fee to pay every year.... It is now registered.

In a twist, for the hell of it, I did write an email to my MP (first time ever) to ask if it makes sense that anyone arriving from the EU can pay the normal £165 but if you are fleeing war from Ukraine you have to pay £295. Amazingly he has taken up the case and apparently the Treasury are now looking into it. Still not going to hold my breath but it would be consistent with other concessions made to Ukranians.

The treasury will probably change the rules so everyone pays the higher figure.

Most Ukrainian's are driving around in Ukrainian registered vehicles.

Starting to wish I hadn't tried to do the right thing.

2 x headlight units replaced
rear fog lights swapped
speedo decal replaced for Mph

boat load of documents needed to prove prior residence in Ukraine (Transfer of Residence or TOR)
£200 on IVA test 3 hour round trip (5 hours total)
2nd boat load required for registration
£55 registration fee and £295 first tax

Got my reg number now but a week later its still not showing up in third part sites like tyre companies where you enter your reg etc. Most importantly its not showing up in insurance comparison sites.
No doubt I'll need specialist insurance or should I risk it and simply chose an almost identical vehicle/trim level....? Have a feeling I shouldn't.

And to think I could have carried on driving round insured on a Ukranian green card for at least 6 months after import. No wonder nobody tries to do all this.

I'm not moaning though honest!
