My brother's birthday is due an I want to buy a present for him. He moved a few weeks ago and now only has a laptop and WLAN. His collection of compressed music is stored on his laptop, but he wants to listen to it via his HiFi setup. Now, having a wlan and connceting the laptop to the amp with a cable is pretty useless.

Are there any devices available that allow me to push music over wlan to my stereo (RCA plugs)? Best would be to have some software independent version so I can use it on Mac/Win/Unix computers.
I notice there is Apple AirPort Express available; how does it work; does it need the iTunes software?

I have a Netgear MP101 - had it for a year now...works great...comes with its on server software but works with any UPnP enabled server like Music Match

you basically install the server software on your central MP3 PC, plug the unit into your hi-fi and it acts a client on your wireless network...you can pick em up from under £100

Are there any devices without remote control or display, so that music feed is controled by the laptop?

Short range FM transmitter?

Quality may suffer a little and of course he needs a tuner but just the ticket...

Good idea, Matt!
Stereo has a tuner of course. An FM transmitter is illegal, but so is speeding

Squeezebox - remote control, but also totally controllable via a web browser. Incredible kit.

I noticed these are widely for sale in the US - an Apple store we went into had several versions. You'd think if they caused a problem then the FCC would be down on them like a ton of bricks.
There's loads for sales on eBay (UK).

Here's an interesting product I stumbled across http://playlistmag.com/reviews/2005/04/airclickusb2/index.php - so your brother could remotely control his wireless laptop

Apple airtunes does exactely this. Its controlled by itunes. Although you can control squeezbox though a web based interface from your computer, in fact any computer conected to the internet.
