coincidence or should i be worried?
Discussion
Hi all
Was after some thoughts following a coincidental (or maybe not) couple of events this week and to be honest I wasn’t really sure if GG was the right place to put this but……..yesterday evening we got a knock on the door and there’s a guy standing there, says “Hi, I live down ABC road and was hoping that your CCTV on the side of your house caught a low loader going down the road”. We live in a corner house and the road to the side is ABC road where the bloke said he lived, he then went on to say that he thought the guy driving the low loader had been scoping out his car to lift it and he was trying to get a decent pic to try an ID them / their vehicle. Must admit I was caught a little and not thinking just said no sorry that one’s not working (its not). Then I realised what I’d said and added that we were waiting for the security company to service it etc so in the meantime we were just relying on Ring cameras.
I thought that once i'd said i couldnt help he’d just go but instead he tried to engage in lots of conversation, saying how nice mine and my wife’s cars were and how well we must be doing - all a bit random / strange. In all the time he was there he didn’t hide himself (from our Ring doorbell) and was potentially just a chatty bloke, however this morning we happened to notice that the towing eye on my wife’s car was sticking out and neither of us have ever had cause to ever touch it. So was that just coincidence or was the bloke last night genuine and there was someone in the area possibly going round looking at cars with a view to lifting one OR was he the one scoping us / our CCTV out? I’ve looked back on the Ring doorbell and unfortunately can’t see anyone fiddling with the front of my wife’s car so have no real idea when the towing eye was moved. I suppose now it’s a case of just being more vigilant and looking out for a low loader being driven around!

Like you say I'm not sure it makes much difference does it? Either persons unknown are going around scoping out cars to nick, or he is. But if I were going to steal somebody's car and I was concerned about CCTV I probably wouldn't knock on their door and make sure they (and any CCTV they've got) got a good look at me first.

Go and knock on the door of the house where he said he lived?
If he answers just say the camera is working again now, any more problems etc?
If he does not answer... well you know what that means.

How do people survive with this amount of paranoia?
It isn’t necessarily paranoia. I’ve had people that pretended to be decent turn out not to be and as I wouldn’t be like that I took it that everyone was like me once upon a time. Nowadays sadly I’m not like that and I wouldn’t trust a stranger that knocked on my door and asked about my security. OP sounds like you’ll be getting the car lifted or the house broken into soon. Get your security beefed up. Hopefully nothing will happen but it definitely sounds dodgy to me. Out of interest did he have an accent?
Thanks for comments to date, unfortunately the bloke didn’t say which number he lived at and I wasn’t overly interested in having a conversation with him. However with hindsight I wish I had at least asked which house was his!
No markings outside on driveway, pavement or wall and nothing on Ring to show anyone attempting anything even in the middle of the night.
As for the paranoia, maybe maybe not. To be honest if it had just been a knock at the door and a quick chat then perhaps you could say I was being a little paranoid but to find the towing eye tampered with is a little too coincidental for my liking so maybe not?!

Is it still paranoia when they really are out to get you? Lots of cars are getting stolen - there's no reason not to take precautions. If anyone comes knocking and talking about the cars on my drive, I am immediately very suspicious. I'm aware of locals who have reported lowlifes knock on the door to check if someone is home before pinching cars. It's often caught on camera. LunarOne said:

I've tried everything to stop it, but my tinfoil hat just doesn't seem as good these days.
