Andy Burnham - 78mph in a 40 limit, 6 points + £2k fine
Discussion

Presumably didn't notice the variable limit, didn't notice the camera flashes (assuming it was HADECS?), and was driving well above the normal speed limit anyway, probably ~85mph on many speedometers.
Seems he got off fairly lightly, that would probably be a ban at another court for the same offence!

tbh it's easily done on variable speed limit motorways.
I've lost count of the number of times the limit has dropped to a ridiculously low speed only for there to be nothing on the road. One example, a gantry showing 20mph with no prior warning and then nothing after it either (CW on the M25 at J15).
It's a risk you take if you don't change your speed. Pretending you didn't know, I assume, would have been purely an attempt reduce his punishment. Not sure what other defense you would use.
Expense mistake for him.

Surely the major of Manchester can do better than that, or is it some sort of I grew up working class image thing?
Suppose he could’ve been in something a little more ‘becoming’ of his role, but then you’d be calling him a champagne socialist…Surely the major of Manchester can do better than that, or is it some sort of I grew up working class image thing?
Too busy to obey their own rules

A surprising statistic about those that are supposed to set an example.

I do like that he said he didn’t know it was 40 when he was over 70 anyway - although I think your 85 comment is inaccurate these days.Bearing in mind 78 is spot on as fast as you drive in a 70 without triggering action, I wonder if him being at that speed was a coincidence, or deliberate?

Isn't that what Volvo's are for?

See, even MPs aren’t all bad.

“This was made up of a fine of £1,353, a victim surcharge of £541 and costs of £90.“
The fine appears to be based on a declared net income of £2030 per week. That’s a gross annual income of approximately £185,000.
The surcharge is fixed at 40% of the fine.
I'm surprised the fine wasn't nearer to the 2k max for, barring a sniff, double the limit. Any thoughts? The fine appears to be based on a declared net income of £2030 per week. That’s a gross annual income of approximately £185,000.

A Band D fine would have been justified. If so then 75% of the £2500 maximum is £1875. £750 surcharge. £90 costs. £2715 total. And of course the max is now £2.5k

Is his income stated somewhere, or did you back calculate it?Appreciate he may well have multiple sources of income but his salary as Mayor is nowhere near that.

The maximum fine for a motorway speeding offence (level 4 on the standard scale) has been £2.5k since 1992. And of course the max is now £2.5k
Edit, when you get to my age 1992 wasn't long ago

But surely you would quickly question why you were going twice as fast as everyone else and realise a limit must be in force.

Pretty well this. Cruise control set at 77/78 mph ?

Probably on his phone. But surely you would quickly question why you were going twice as fast as everyone else and realise a limit must be in force.

I haven’t seen the time of the offence mentioned but it may have been late at night if the slip road had been closed for roadworks, so perhaps not much traffic.
