Sending large item back to Amazon
Discussion
I bought a Vax carpet washer from Amazon, which decided to catch fire today. Amazon want me to return it for refund which is fine. Trouble is I don't have the box any longer, so I’m going to have to make do somehow. Anybody ever sent something this big/awkward back to Amazon. Are they fussy about how it goes back? The chat bot is not very helpful. It’s going to be nigh on impossible to pack it in a way that garantees no damage in transit.

Just wrap it in brown paper abd stick thd return label on it.
I just don’t want to give them an excuse to keep hold of what is a lot of money.

If you're a regular Amazon buyer you might find you don't even need to return it. I've had several items that I managed to get refunded without a return.
Get off the chat bot and onto the proper online chat. Explain to them that the crap they sold you caught fire, offer them photos and tell them you no longer have the packaging or the inclination to waste more of your time arranging return. You can often get them to make a refund anyway. I have.
Last one was an expensive glass item that turned up in many pieces. Got a refund after explaining I didn't want to waste my time returning literal rubbish to them.

I would hope that providing pictures of fire damage would be enough to not require it to be sent back.
I persevered with chat and think I was speaking to a human in the end. Because I mentioned heat/fire/smoke they want it back for a safety inspection, which is fair enough. Picking it up Tuesday.blueST said:

Are they sending a replacement out? Ship the dead one in the replacement's box.I returned a vacuum cleaner to Amazon. I only had a box that would contain the body of the vac and the hose coiled up inside, I I gaffer taped the metal pipes to the outer box - no problem with refund.
Years ago I bought a trampoline from Amazon c.£100 that was a 2 man delivery. The box was missing the fixings. When I called up, they suggested I buy them and they would reimburse me. I did so and it came to nearly £60, so I asked for a replacement. They sent a replacement, but told me to keep other order.
